Is it good my child likes driving cars but freely not in a race?

our grandkids play it aged 9 & 11, they love choosing different cars, tracks etc, they mastered controls easily -

Can two players play simultaneously?

I think so been a few years since I played it and can't remember.

Is there only 6 competitors during the race, just like a GT 3 ??

I haven't played it for a while because my ps3 died at the beginning of the year but I'm pretty sure it was 12 competitors when playing against the computer but I never played it on PSN so I'm not sure if its different for that.
