A Brighter Summer Day [THE CRITERION COLLECTION]

I used to watch arppox. 20 films/month, for almost 15 years. Any genre apart from romantic comedy's or science-fiction (with the exception of the more brilliant stuff like the Alien films). Any films from around 1914 to nowadays. So I think it's safe to say I've seen a LOT of films over the years. :) I was always a HUGE fan of Edward Yang's "Yi Yi", but I was never able to find "A Brighter Summer Day". Man man man, was I ever happy when I finally got my hands on this one... what a visual masterpiece !!! Almost every shot is pure eye candy, and even though it takes a little time to get into the story (with so many characters), the film never feels like it's too long or you can't understand the plot. When the almost 4 hours are over, all you want to do is watch it all over again. This is a film EVERY film lover should see. You MUST see this, it's a real work of art.

Good quality and best film ever

The problem with trying to writing a review for the film itself is that I am left completely blown away and speechless by it. It’s a 4 hour journey that feels like 2, with every frame feeling like an obsessively composed work of art. If the length of the film is not something you'd be willing to put up with, regardless of flawless pacing, then fair enough, but its worth it. I can't post links in this review, but after viewing the film, I'd advise watching the Criterion restoration video on YouTube, which shows just how much of an incredible achievement this Criterion release really is. Also after watching the film at least once, I STRONGLY recommend the 4 part review from YouTuber Daisuke Beppu, who outlines the many reasons why this is one of the greatest achievements in cinema, and happens to also be one of the most humble, welcoming, and passionate about movies people you'll ever listen to.

I won't say much as there isn't much to be said that hasn't been said already, all I will say is that the daunting 4 hours run time is absolutely deserved, the £18 price tag is equally deserved figuring that this is one of the highest quality blu-rays that I own and that if you are in the right mindset to sit down and watch this film, you will find that it is about as close to perfect as a film can ever get! The easiest 5/5 I have ever given!

A Brighter Summer Day, c'est un jeune réalisateur (Edward Yang) qui soudainement monte en puissance pour nous sortir son Il était une fois à Taïwan et qui n'a pas à rougir de la comparaison avec vous savez quel film de Leone. Bonus : Comme d'habitude avec Jean-Michel lorsqu'il s'agit d'évoquer Edward Yang, il en dit ni trop ni pas assez et ses rappels historiques sont toujours utiles. L'éditeur Carlotta nous gâte une fois de plus avec cette belle édition.

公開時に見逃してしまい、その後鑑賞する機会に恵まれず、ずっと気になっていた作品だったので、やっと見ることができて（それもこのクオリティで）感無量です。来年全国公開もされるそうですが・・・。 動作確認のためにちょっと再生してみようと思ったのが運の尽き、冒頭の撮影所のシーンから引き込まれてしまい、結局４時間、徹夜で見てしまいました。侯孝賢の『恋々風塵』や『童年往時』をさらに厳しくしたような内容で、一喜一憂しながら主人公の少年の心の動きを追体験しているうちに、ラストで気持ちのやり場に困るような、非常につらい心境になりました。しばらく気持ちの整理がつかないまま、引きずりそうです。 印象に残るシーンを挙げればきりがないのですが、とりわけトルストイの『戦争と平和』を巡るやりとりが感動的でした（好きな小説が効果的に使われていて嬉しいというだけかも）。エドワード・ヤンの他の作品も見たくなりました。次は『恐怖分子』、見てみます。 Disc１には236分の本編、Disc２は特典映像ということで、台湾ニューシネマについてのドキュメンタリー（113分、当然侯孝賢も出てきます）、主人公を演じたChang Chenのインタビュー（20分）、エドワード・ヤンが演出したLikely Consequenceという舞台のビデオ映像（45分、古いハンディカメラの粗い映像です）と盛りだくさんです。特典にも英字幕が出ます。本編にはTony Raynsという批評家のオーディオコメンタリーが入っているのですが、これにはさすがに英字幕は出ません。 「台湾」というと日影丈吉が『応家の人々』や『内部の真実』で描いた仄暗く懐かしいイメージがあるのですが（日本との歴史的な関係を考えると「懐かしい」というのはちょっと語弊があるかも）、この映画でも特に夜の深い闇の映像が素晴らしかったです。

This movie takes me back to my child-hood days dealing with my identity an the crush I had on the girl down the street, an the biggest problem of all is how do I fit-in in a world with my friends, how you should do the right thing, A Brighter Summer Day” is not so bright a-day after you’ve seen the outcome, I can tell you that. like Elvis Presley song Are You Lonesome Tonight” with a phrase of words when I kissed you goodnight, this movie takes on the life of a whole new generation back in the Sixties, when Elvis was king an everyone wanted to be like him, you have two warring gangs an one boy who’s caught in the middle, there is enough here to fill your delight at just under 4 hours, I mean two min shy of. I just don’t think you will be bored at all, just saying. it has the same Teen-Rebellion feel of Mean Streets an Rebel Without a Cause, but when you use different weapons you get different results, I can’t believe this 4 Hours went by so fast, I was so wrap up by it’s enormous strength of powerful characters, that I didn’t have time to pick the bad ones, actually I don’t think there was one or two, what I also love is the way it was filmed, like the doorway scenes which comes up a lot an the long take of empathy from his parents right down to the young teens, and I forgot to mention War an Peace comes up a lot too, this final conclusion of this movie will absolutely shock you , I was stunned an almost to the point of grief-stricken with guilt for watching this whole Beautiful movie an then to hit so hard with a thud like bolt, I tell you I was not expecting that at all. this Criterion Collection is so beautifully to look at, picture perfect quality. even the night scenes are clear an crisp, Brighter Summer Day You Can’t Catch Up-Too...
