![Ran [Blu-ray] [Region B]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81Uw3jOJ7CL._AC_SL3840_.jpg)

One of the most important and influential film makers in cinematic history, Akira Kursawa directed 30 films in a career spanning 57 years. His final masterpiece, RAN has been beautifully restored in 4k for the first time. A reimagining of Shakespeareโs King Lear set in feudal Japan, Ran tells the story of Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsya Nakadai โ Yojimbo, Kagemusha) an aging warlord who, after spending his life consolidating his empire, decides to abdicate and divide his Kingdom amongst his three sons Taro (Akira Terao - Letter from the Mountain, Dreams), Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu โ The Man in White, Red Shadow: Akakage) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryu - Tono monogatari, Gojo reisenki: Gojoe). When Saburo voices concerns about the wisdom of his fatherโs plan, claiming that treachery within the family will be inevitable, Hidetora mistakes these comments for a threat and when his servant Tango comes to Saburo's defense, he banishes both of them. This allows Taro and Jiro to take charge, unopposed, leading to a brutal and bloody struggle for the absolute power of the warlord. Extras Review: Genuine Masterwork - This is without doubt one of the all time masterpieces of film making. The transfer to Blu-Ray is phenomenal with colour being such an important part of the visual language in this film it is really done justice here. If you love the medium of film then this is a must have work from Akira Kurasawa at the very peak of his powers, loosely modelled around King Lear it shows the precariousness of power as age affects you, and the reality that one generation can influence but not control the next. Absolutely breath-taking Review: The colour in this film is outstanding in this Blu ... - The colour in this film is outstanding in this Blu ray version, The story is almost incidental to the visual power of many of the scenes - a film to be cherished and explored, A film by a master of his craft

Kurasawa goodness
Good edition of the movie

Improved detail. Too much DNR.
This restored version is definitely a marked improvement detail-wise over the American blu ray release. The only problem is that they went pretty heavy on the DNR. Faces look a little waxy and the lack of grain doesn't do any favors to the few effect shots and matte paintings.

Excellent blu-ray of a classic film
I had an older DVDs of this classic film and the picture quality on this new version is far superior. Highly recommended.

Dream (or nightmare) like
This is Akira Kurosawa's last "Big" film and is an adaption of William Shakespeare's King Lear set in an undefined feudal period of japan, the whole film is excellently paced with a dreamy use of the camera in many scenes showing at later points the mind of the Lord as it unravels.

A movie I have loved for years first on VHS then on DVD
A movie I have loved for years first on VHS then on DVD. I never got to see it in the theater. It arrived this morning and I was just going to check out the transfer quality but could not stop watching it. What a gift Studiocanal has given us.

Ne Plus Ultra!!!
I'd bought earlier SD and BD editions of this film over the past decade; none of them was very impressive. I'll not be buying any more, because this "Digitally Restored" Edition's picture quality cannot be improved upon. (NB US collectors: It is a Region B release...)
