In the sixties, the legendary Vee-Jay label was the one of the leading independent labels specialising in music for Black Americans which built up a formidable catalogue featuring an amazing array of doo-wop, gospel, soul, rock'n'roll and of course blues. ' The Blues' was a compilation originally released in America in 1960 which contained many of the label's biggest commercial hits of the previous few years. When it was released in 1961 it was also probably the first blues compilation of its kind in the United Kingdom, introducing artists like Jimmy Reed, Jimmy Witherspoon, J.B. Lenoir and Memphis Slim to a whole new audience. Disc 2 features 21 other classic blues tracks from the label's back catalogue.

Classic tracks marred by remastering.
Reissue of classic Vee Jay compilation with 22 extra tracks. Only gripe is the awful remastering - harsh top end that sounds shrill and overwhelms all of the recordings. Such a shame.

A great introduction to the blues.
Disc 1 of this excellent 2-CD set is a replica of the 12-track LP that had a huge influence on the British blues boom of the early 1960s.Groups such as The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds and The Animals covered tracks on this iconic album which, for many, was their first taste of the blues.Disc 2 contains a further 22 tracks from the VEE-JAY vaults including classics from Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, John Lee Hooker & Eddie Taylor.This is a great introduction to the blues which, hopefully, will help convert a new generation to this wonderful music.
