The essential account of geopolitics - including an afterword on President Donald Trump 'For anyone wanting to find out more about the world we live in . . . there is one simple answer: read Noam Chomsky' New Statesman Noam Chomsky: philosopher, political writer, fearless activist. No one has done more to question the hidden actors who govern our lives, calling the powers that be to account. Here he presents Who Rules the World? , his definitive account of those powers, how they work, and why we should be questioning them. From the dark history of the US and Cuba to China's global rise, from torture memos to sanctions on Iran, this book investigates the defining issues of our times and exposes the hypocrisy at the heart of America's policies and actions. The world's political and financial elite are now operating almost totally unconstrained by the so-called democratic structure. With climate change and nuclear proliferation threatening our very survival, dissenting voices have never been more necessary. Fiercely outspoken and rigorously argued, Who Rules the World? is an indispensable guide to how things really are. 'Chomsky is a giant: not just for his intellect, but for his huge influence on millions of people who want an alternative to injustice' Owen Jones

Everyone should read this book
Impeccably researched. If youโre annoyed with how the world is, this book explains it all, very well.

Excellent, if flawed
Very powerful book with some excellent ideas and insights, enough to sicken yourself about the world. Hampered by some terrible editing -- most chapters are padded with bits from other chapters; how many times do we need to read about America's post-WWII dominance or the Gaza Strip? The repetition dilutes the message. Also, there's no clear thesis or answer to the problems. Maybe that's the point. Still well worth a read, just keep that knife at arm's reach...

If you want good information on how international politics works, this book delivers.
Iโm only one third through reading. Itโs good to send me to sleep- definitely not a page turner. But if you are interested in global politics you will be enlightened. Itโs bound to be USA oriented because of the writer. Although I do find Chomsky dense reading, he does fantastic research and I trust him. So far I have already been enlightened about important political world events, so I am pleased to read the book. Iโm a big Chomsky fan from his linguistic theories studied at university and feel I cannot be disappointed by his logical conclusions.

Shockingly insightful..
I doubt anyone can read this list of suffering without being moved, whether they believe Chomsky's analysis or the views of those he opposes. There has been a lot of unaccountedย bloodshed andย death.Chomsky's trademark "brain-drilling" is evident, as is his meticulous attention to detail.I admire how he constructs his story and backs it up with evidence. As always, his well-considered and thorough analysis of various diplomatic and military events astounds and convinces me.For those who are unfamiliar with Chomsky's work, this is an easyย introductory. It is, nonetheless, a "must" for anyone who has previously enjoyed reading his books.

very interesting, at bit of an eye opener
It the first time Iโve read a book by Noam Chomsky I found the book really interesting, but it seemed quite biased and somewhat repetitive at times, Noam spent a lot of time criticising the west and its policies towards foreign powers, but gave very little in comparison to the problems caused by Russia and North Korea etc to balance the agreements out.

Chomsky is great.
The great thing about Chomsky is his searing clarity backed up by forensically mined evidence. The US is the most dangerous country the world has ever seen - armed to the teeth and interfering everywhere. Yes, their is abstract 'freedom' - to say what you like, to buy a Rolls Royce, to travel to the moon. But those who really wield power are those who control resources - the press and big business and the military. You only have to ask one question to see through the US. How does Israel get away with it? The reality is that no other country in the world would get away with what Israel does - and it gets away with it because the US (and the UK) support AND defend it.

Failure of democracy...
Great read, gobbled it up in two sittings. Gives a completely different view of how democracy works to the accepted, media driven view. The behaviour of America, and the UK, has been disgraceful, and this book really drives that home. We are hypocrites, we are selfish, as nations...as individuals we know this, yet democracy fails to let us do anything about it. I worry even more about the future. My only criticism...there is a lot of repetition.

playing Great Power politics with gusto
There is some evidence of under editing: a couple duplicated paragraphs, some catchy phrases and key themes revisited a little too often, et al. But then the central idea - America's decades-old, rapine imperialism is the major cause of global instability today - hinges on the discussion of the same topics over and over again, from multiple perspectives, and so it's not entirely unsurprising. He doesn't hold back on his presentation of the USA as an imperial power, lately fallen from its apogee, but still fully in the 'old school' mode, playing Great Power politics with gusto, not to mention a breath-taking disregard for its much professed, tediously iterated, ideals of freedom - sorry, FREEDOM! - Human Rights and the spread of democratic ideals. Seen from Chomsky's analysis, it's anything but.I don't suppose this thesis is particularly new, however it is set out with a degree of methodical precision and a depth of scholarship which lifts it above the merely polemical, and forces one to focus anew on some previously-thought-familiar facts. I found myself checking the notes time and again, spluttering over my coffee thinking, Did so-and-so really say that?!, and, Is this really happening?! Turns out so-and-so did, and, alas, it is...Definitely worth a look. Prepare to be rather depressed by the end.

I didn't know that Chomsky proposed so many political and diplomatic proposal
I didn't know that Noam Chomsky who is I have been understanding thata prominent theoretical linguist on "generative grammar" which demonstratesthat the lingistic behavior of human's mother language development is innate, and is different from his/her first foreign language (or second language)learning theory if human has it.What I didn't know is Chomsky has deeply and widely analysed many andprecise diplomatic documents and proposed the right solution strategiesfor almost all the world's conflicts. And what I was much encouraged is that his advice are not pessimistic, nor coercive, nor reproachable but they have high degree of realizability.I have enjoyed very much happy reading time of the book.
