are there different dewalt drills for homeowners and contractors

Yes and no. Any drill or impact driver can be used by a homeowner or a contractor but we might choose the model very differently based on needs. Things like size, capabilities and battery life come to mind. SIZE: Basically two choices for drills - 3/8" and 1/2" drills. Choosing 1/2" expands the # of drill bits. Impact drivers are fine in 1/4". CAPABILITY Hammer drills provide the option to drill into masonry. BATTERY LIFE Homeowners typically choose the low priced option of 1.3 and 1.5 amp whereas contractors typically don't use less than a 2amp. Some prefer 3, 4 and even 5 amp versions for their long life. Of course, larger batteries not only cost more but they weigh more. PS I know my answer is 2 yrs after you posted but I thought it was a good question and it wasn't answered quite as well as it could have been. I hope others benefit. :)

Does it come with the hard case?

Mine came with the standard soft case/bag.

some say this is one speed, others it is variable - which is it?I have not used a impact driver before and confused between speed and torque settings.

It is "variable" by how far you depress the trigger there is no high , medium, low adjustment. Lightly press the trigger and it will go slow, press it in further the faster the speed will be

what is the difference between the c2 and the d2

I believe it is the volt the c2 has 20 volts and the d2 has 18 volts other then that I'm not sure. Hope I could help
