Is size 5(UK) ladies shoe, small or medium on size chart?

UK Size 5 is size SMALL (UK 3-7 OR European size 38-40). Depending on shoe, and XS may well fit, as they are quite flexible.

Can you wear these if it's only frosty with a thin slick of ice, and therefore slippery, but not actual ice per se?

Yes you can wear them when it’s icy. Be careful if going indoors wearing them and the floor is tiled you will slip. They are great at stopping you slipping in snow or ice.

Can you leave them on for driving?

I wouldn't personally. I would worry that it might make my feet slip on the pedals or make them clumsy. I don't really have certainty on that but then why risk it. They really are fantastic for walking in snow though and I highly recommend them. I live up a steep hill and they made it easy to walk up when without them I would have struggled. Maybe a solution would be to have a pair of spare shoes in the car for driving, so you could just change shoes instead of having to take the yaktrax off of the walking shoes.

I tried Getagrip ice spikes, some help with grip but very uncomfortable on clear paths. Are Trax better & will hard surfaces damage them? T

I’ve tried spikes and yak tracks and I much prefer the latter because my spikes wore out much quick and didn’t seem to grip quite as well as yaktrax. You can use them on clear paths but depending on your weight I imagine the springs might get squashed down easily that way. I’m not sure if that would affect the grip or not though.
