Question 1

I plan on sharpening soft core colored pencils. Does it matter what setting i use? My goal is to avoid lead breakage. Thanks.

I sharpen Prismacolor Premier pencils, Prismacolor Scholar, Derwent Coloursoft and the Derwent blender/burnisher with the T'gaal. I love this sharpener!! I tend to use setting 3 to 5 - the number is really more what kind of point you want, with 3 being a wider sharp and 5 narrowest. When I use the #5 setting on Prisma Verithins they look like lethal weapons lol! ;) Seriously, breakage is not usually a problem. Just make sure you don't drop your pencils on the floor or let them bang around while stored. Also I have heard if you suspect your lead is broken (which is what makes it break when you sharpen), try putting in the microwave for a few seconds at a time. I would start at 15 and check often, you don't want it to to melt completely since they are already soft. Remember to hold your pencil firmly so you sharpen with a round motion and not side to side. Please, what are the 5 different angles? I need 30 degrees.

I can't find any angles so I used the picture supplied, using the point as the angle you need, and measured the perpendicular axis as the adjacent side, measured then halved the pencil width for the opposite side and used the tan function to determine the angle (which had to be doubled to get the answer); given it was measured off a blown up picture and the likely measure / distortion errors inherent in the method employed, Here are the answers I got by Position: 1 = 42'  / 2 =  35' / 3 = 30' / 4 = 25' / 5 = 20'; my guess would be to try positions 2 and three and judge which one gives the best result.

But does it sharpen the thicker pencils, like polychromos and derwent?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it will sharpen Derwent Coloursoft and Inktense colored pencils, Polychromos, Prismacolor, Prismacolor Verithins, Marco Renoir and Marco Raffiné, and quite an array of Chinese brands of oil-. Water-, and wax-based colored pencils quite nicely. I think that maybe something a little thicker than the Inktense pencils from Derwent might not work, as the actual size of the pencil is not adjustable, just the angle of the tip that is created adjusts, from a very slim sharp point that would be used for harder-cored pencils such as the Prisma Verithins, to a shorter, thicker but no less pointy at the end, soft-core pencil such as the Prismacolor Premier 150 soft core, the Derwent Inktense or Coloursoft pencils.

I just ordered two more of these, as my daughter seems to have made off with my original two for her costume and art design enterprises. I highly recommend this line of pencil sharpeners for at the very least the above-mentioned colored pencils. It would also work well for graphite pencils and charcoal pencils as well.

Are there any other sharpeners (hand crank or electric) that can deliver the shorter, sturdier tip that Setting #1 gives?

I’ve never found one, except for very expensive ones that I wasn’t about to buy for cheap golf pencils.
