The updated retrospective published for McCullin's 80th birthday. Contains 40 new unpublished photographs and a new introduction ― the definitive edition. McCullin’s reputation has long been established as one of the greatest photographers of conflict in the last century. In the fourteen years since the first publication of the book, McCullin has shed the role of war photographer and become a great landscape artist. He has also travelled widely through Africa, India, the Middle East and among the tribes living in Stone Age conditions in Indonesia. His journey from the back streets of north London to his rural retreat in the depths of Somerset is unparalleled. It includes a passage through the most terrible scenes of recent history, for which his stark views of the West Country offer him some redemption. Review: This book is not signed - Be aware! This book is not signed as advertised! I was very disappointed when I saw it is not signed as I had hoped to have owned a book signed by Don McCullin as I am a great admirer of his photography. The book is still a beautiful thing and this seems to be the only place that it is still available new. I have given the book five stars as it is superb but I would give desertcart 0 stars for incorrectly selling it as a signed copy Review: A superb book - I’ve always admired McCullins work and this book certainly shows his skill, dedication and the dangers he faced getting the perfect image. First the printing, always something I like to know about before I buy. This book is beautifully printed and whilst there are several images printed across the centrefold, always a shame most images are printed one to a page. The book is divided by place and time and includes, images of war, documentary, portrait, and landscape. The images are superb in every category and confirms to me that McCullin is not a war photographer, he is simply one of greatest photographers who has documented the last 50 years.

Worth more than twice the price
The thing that struck me most about this incredible book is how many of the images were already somewhere in the back of my head - the albino child in Biafra, the grieving woman in Cyprus, the British soldiers running down a road in Derry. Since the erection of the Berlin Wall in 1961, Don McCullin had an uncanny knack of being in the wrong place at the right time and has used his camera to produce a searing indictment of humanity in the second half of the 20th century. The fact that he was shamelessly denied going to cover the Falklands is a testament to the power of his images. Yes, it's sometimes very hard to look at - but in a way I think that's the whole point. Real people, real lives - and real deaths. If I had to complain about anything it's that it doesn't come with a free DVD of the McCullin documentary - where this incredibly eloquent man talks about the stories behind some of his most famous images. What the hell - buy both of them. They're both astonishing.

Simply superb.
A wonderful retrospective of our greatest living photographer. What this man has experienced and witnessed throughout his sixty plus year career would leave todays snowflakes in therapy for the rest of their lives. Thank god for men like him who made us all aware of what was going on in the world at the time. Essential if you care about modern history and mans inhumanity to his fellow man, as is the DVD bio, which is even more harrowing. The man is a national treasure.

Excellent printing quality.
An important renowned photographers book beautifully printed and bound. Donald McCullin's work presented in a powerful and well considered order. I accidentally water damaged my previous copy so bought this new one. I reflect over it constantly. Superb photographer and superb graphics. A gem of a book and a truly world renowned photographer.

4.5 out of 5. One of the great documentary photographer.
Don McCullin: The New Definitive Edition is an essential book for photographers. It I was going to rank the imagery on its own, the book would get 5 stars, easily. Don McCullin is one of the great documentary photographers and his work will often show the dark side of society. From war and famine, through to poverty and neglect in society. Many of the images are harrowing, with depictions of death, injury, starvation and illness. None of these things are glorified and I was left with a sense of sadness because humanity can often be so terrible. The book it self is very high quality, the paper used is very good and the prints are very good. The reason it drops a star (more half a star), is because some of the image cover 2 pages and with the beginning of the book, you can't see the whole of the centre of the image. This is much better at the end of the book, where you can see the the image on both sides of the page. This is really a minor problem but still unfortunately, an issue. So overall I would give this book 4.5 out of 5.

The Master
Don McCulin's breath taking work, is utterly masterful and deeply moving, not always easy to view but suffused with McCullin's profound empathy for his subjects and his remarkable eye for detail. It is incredible that these images which bring the true horror of war and famine and conflict straight into the viewers heart and soul would no longer be printed in newspapers and magazines for fear of upsetting viewers, but hiding from the horror doesn't make it go away and if we refuse to even bear witness then we are complicit in the darkness that suffuses the world.

Loved book, but Bait & Switch, not a signed edition as advertised.
I was upset this book was not signed. I really wanted a signed version since I am a fan. Once I looked at the book, I found it to be a great book for the price and I did not have the heart to return it. Those who have served will understand.
