Inspiring more than Instructive
Fashion Design Drawing Course: Principles, Practice, and Techniques: The New Guide for Aspiring Fashion Artists -- Now with Digital Art Techniques FASHION Design DRAWING COURSE by Carline Tatham and Julian Seaman Revised by Jemi Armstrong and Wynn Armstrong Having found two BARRON books to be of excellent quality and fitness for purpose, I took another look at an earlier purchase to see whether I missed its import. By and large, my opinion is little changed. The 160 pp paperback, beautifully produced in 9" x 9" format, is organized as 4 sections with the contents of a college course. The authors state that their purpose is to present a compendium of the requirements for a career in designing apparel, and some ways to enter the industry. The book acquits its purpose well enough; I think teachers will find it useful as a check list for their courses, but students are liable to misconstrue it as instruction. The first section discusses how to stimulate inspiration. The college milieu is supremely efficient for stimulating inspiration, networking, and mating --- not to mention liquid stimulants. But I believe that anybody who needs a book to find inspiration is better advised to seek another career. Creative industries are fiercely competitive; the winners need instruction for selecting from their floods of ideas the few that justify investment in marketing. The second section is an abridged compendium of techniques for illustrating designs for fashions. I believe wannabees will only waste their talent and resources by specializing before acquiring a solid grounding in drawing and painting, equivalent to at least two years of life study. More inspiring than the text, the gorgeous illustrations are worth the price of the book. Students are told to develop a style. DON'T. True style is the way you see expressed by your skill. You cannot choose your natural style any more than you can choose the colour of your eyes or the way your body wants to walk; it develops naturally. Affecting a style will retard your vision and your skill. And it will soon be out of style. Copy a current style for as long as it lasts to get current income. The third section explains the procedure many successful designers follow to create a collection for presentation to buyers. Here, the book delivers its promise for students who have a competence in design and illustration. The last section tells what big buyers want to see in wannabees' portfolios. In my experience, buyers deal with people they know before dealing with applicants who show. The most important part of presentation is getting to know your buyer before applying for a position --- and getting your buyer to know about you. I have been hired on the spot for jobs that could be reached only through reams of formal applications through a mile of hoops, simply because the personnel manager knew me by reputation and wanted my track record on his crew. That's what networking is all about. I was offered a job as art director in a national agency simply because an executive saw my work on the street. Always remember and bear in mind that your reputation is always on show. How do you get a reputation? By developing your work and putting it on show wherever you can; public exposure is your real portfolio. They look at bound portfolios when they are desperate. An employer who hears about you from one person will grant you an audience. An employer who hears about you from two people will hire you. An employer who hears about you from three people will come looking for you. TP .
