Great replacement for the one I lost!
I wouldn't have needed this except I lost my other loupe in a recent move! This one is slightly larger but it works well. I'm still holding out hope that I find my other one and have a back-up!

That's what it says.
I have found this to be useful in examining 35 mm negatives. This is 10x magnification which works well for me. However, keep in mind that I am an amateur photographer and I don't know whether this would come up to any kind of professional standard.

Good, NOT Great
For the price, this is a useful item to have in your kit. I bought mine based on an online recommendation, for use in focusing a DSLR camera for nighttime sky shots. It's a reasonable size, is light-weight, and was CHEAP. That said, I have two primary gripes:1) When viewing a flat surface, my loupe is out of focus; it must be raised off the flat surface being examined by 3 or 4mm in order to focus on the flat surface under the loupe. This is probably a desirable trait if you're interested in examining a 3D object like a coin or insect, but it doesn't work well for me and my intended use. A variable focus (by for example turning the eyepiece) would be a significant benefit in this regard, but the Carson does not have this feature.2) Focus deviates as you look further from the center of the field of view. For a cheap plastic lens, this is totally expected, and this effect is reduced if you move your eye closer to the eyepiece. Not a deal-breaker, but worth mentioning.I'm going to try adjusting focus using some cardboard shims - we'll see if I'm successful. All that said, for the money, it's a worthwhile piece of equipment for your kit.

Does a good job replacing the vintage Agfa 8X Lupe
The Archive uses a number of loupes spread around the facility. Our loupes seem to have legs as they are always wandering off and getting lost. So we are in need of a constant supply of high quality budget priced loupes. Clean vintage Agfa 8X Lupes are getting very hard to find, so we were in search of a replacement loupe to adopt. The vintage Agfa 8X Lupe was probably the best budget priced loupe ever made. (Note: Agfa spells loupe as lupe) The vintage Agfa 8X Lupe was the standard for loupe excellence in the graphic arts industry in the 1970's - 1980's and beyond. And note, the modern day Agfa Lupe is not the same optical quality as the vintage model. Many of the competition's loupes need to be screw focused or raised off the subject to focus them. Some of the loupes work better if you use them upside down. Others won't yield a sharp image no matter what position they are in. There is a wide range of budget priced loupes out there and they are all different as to sharpness and field of view. The vintage Agfa 8X Lupe image is sharp when you put it flat on an object and focus is perfect as-is. An issue with some of these adjustable loupes is; even if you adjust the focus it wont stay put. The focus is loose as a goose. Also important is the Agfa's wide field of view which makes it easy to use, which is especially important for cine' film work in the Small Gauge Film Archive. When using a loupe in the wet darkroom for process camera work you needed a loupe that was fast to focus, didn't need adjustments and could be gripped with a wet hand. The vintage Agfa Lupe fit the bill perfectly. The Carson LumiLoupe 10X Stand Magnifier #LL-10 is a suitable budget priced replacement for the vintage Agfa 8x Lupe. It has very good sharpness and wide field of view. I'd judge it about 90% or more as good as a vintage Agfa 8X Lupe. Before we adopted them in the Archive I purchased 3 of the Carson LL-10's to test...all 3 were the same high quality view when it came to sharpness. Although the ergonomics are not as good as the Agfa 8X Lupe, the Carson has an indentation that allows for some grip control. But if you don't hit the indentation it can slip out of your hands due to its slope design. Before settling on the Carson LL-10 we tried 14 other budget priced loupes and magnifiers. None could compare to the Carson LL-10 for all the qualities we needed in a loupe. Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection

Mostly ok
This loupe is somewhat ok. I really enjoy the lens diameter, long eye relief, and the large clear sides to admit extra light. I got the version with the reticle, and it is rather crudely printed when you view it through the loupe, it would have been far more precise and better looking if it had been perhaps laser engraved.I got it to look at coins, and that is the biggest problem for me. For coins in slabs, due to the few millimeters of plastic on the front of the slab, I can't get the coin quite in focus. I'd say it's about 90% there, just enough to miss a lot of detail though. And yes, this is with the reticle removed. Coins that are in 2x2 cardboard flips come in sharp though. It also has a fair amount of distortion and chromatic aberration near the edges but that is to be expected for the plastic optics. All said I will probably keep this loupe though for non-slabbed coins and other things like fossils. It's decent for the price.

Great viewing distance and angle
I use this primarily for viewing film negatives on a light table. It works fantastic and I like that I can have my eye a bit off the loupe itself and still see sharp images

This 10x magnifier works OK as a hand held lense.
It isn't designed to be able to unscrew the clear base. That makes it impossible to bring larger objects (like a knife edge) in a little closer for good focus. The distance from the lense to the bottom of the base isn't alway the best focus. The magnifier has 2 lenses that fall apart if the base is removed. That said, the image that the unit produces has very little distortion. I also have the 17.5x Carson lense. It just has a single lense, so the base can be removed. But it also shows more parabolic distortion.
