Axis & Allies: 1940 Pacific Second Edition

This is, without doubt, a brilliant board-based wargame. It represents wthe whole war in the pacific, including china, australsia, and parts of India. The game plays pretty well, though the sea areas are quite large, and the mechanics of the game mean that aircraft carriers lose their main advantage, which was the surprise, and often lucky, attack. The become, instead, just large mbile airfields. The game does come with a stack of cute miniatures however, which are really cool, replacing the cardboard counters found in many board wargames. The rules booklet meeds to be laid out better, and in an easier to follow order, but other than that, it is a fun game. I have found, though, that it cannot be finished in the 2-4 hours that the box suggest, as each faction has a turn, and there are 5 factions. The maps board is quite large though, so plenty of playing area. Asan aside, if you can get hold of the rarer Europe 1940 version, the two games can be played in unison, allowing the whole of world war two to be refought. Of course, this needs a lot of space to leave the game set up, as the boards, plaved side by side, come in at just over 6 foot wide, by just over 4 foot high. But playing the whole fo the war ..... what a game. My friend and I are now into our second whole play through, and are still learning the many nuances of the g ame. It would be nice if whoever owns the copyright brought out a thrid edition, with rules that are more comprehensive, and easier to understand. Then, you might have the ultimate world war two wargame. This is a great game that I have played many times with some pals. I decided to splash out on both the Europe and Pacific versions to be able to play the Global 1940 variant with some other pals. Sadly the UK infantry (cream coloured rather than tan coloured) and the US infantry pieces (green rather than olive drab) were different colours to the rest of their nations pieces. If this detail doesn’t bother you or you intend to paint them then it shouldn’t be much of an issue for you. The mismatched colours bother me and when paying over £200 for both sets, I’m not going to accept such poor attention to detail. This should not reflect on the seller as the game arrived sealed in its original cellophane. I did message them to ask for the correctly coloured infantry pieces but then found the same issue with the European set and that seller didn’t have any means to contact them so I had no choice but to return it. Having returned the European set, I can no longer play the Global 1940 version so I am returning the Pacific version too. I’m bitterly disappointed.

Best when combined with 1940 Europe, but good by itself too

Great game, this game can be played on it's own as just the Pacific Theatre or you can combine it with the European game board and have one massive global conflict. A&A 1940 Europe is a seperate game entirely. The game play is very similar to the original A&A, but both 1940 versions have added features. There are more combat units, a more refined cost schedule and a number of new game play rules. We often skip some of these rules to keep the game a little less complex.
