Making Men: Five Steps to Growing Up

Definitely not one of the guys
Through a most unlikely source, I discovered one of the best books on Christian manhood I’ve yet read. The writing is accessible, the examples realistic, the scriptural references appropriate & useful. This is a book that should be read by fathers & sons AND by mothers & daughters. It outlines the steps towards becoming a man rather than remaining a guy (read the book for an explanation of the difference) and how to recognize a true man when choosing a husband and father. I wish I’d had a book like this when I was 20.

Excellent Book on What it Means to be a Man
I've read a lot of books & articles on the subject of manhood over the years & I'd have to say this one has been the most influential & practical, & that really gets to the heart of what men struggle with, the obstacles in men's way, & how to overcome the struggles on the way to mature manhood. Further, the material is engaging & really brings out what men know to be true deep down inside, & then lights a fire to engage in the work of manhood. I'll be reading this book again to remind myself & as motivation to stay on track. I highly commend this excellent work & am eager to check out some of the author's other books!

Chuck helped shape my son
My son served in the same US Army Ranger unit as Chuck Holton. He had the good fortune to come across another one of Holton's books, A More Elite Soldier, during a very formidable time in his training. This book had a tremendous effect on his life and became a secondary bible that he always carried with him. My son shared his impressions with me and I, in turn became an instant fan of Chuck Holton. My son admired Holton greatly and used his wisdom to help steer and shape the journey he was on.He lost his life during his third tour of duty at the age of 21. Shortly thereafter I received my son's journal which did not contain his private thoughts, but words of wisdom from Holton's book copied verbatim. I then had the good fortune of meeting Holton in person ten months later at a memorial event for Special Operations soldiers who had lost their lives during the previous year. Imagine my surprise when Holton shared with me that he knew my sons story and knew it well. He told me he admired him and was including him in an upcoming book, American Heroes in Special Operations. It was an emotional meeting and I found myself in complete awe! Here I was standing face to face with a man my son deeply respected and admired and he tells me he shares the same sentiment about my son. When I got word that Making Men was close to it's release date, I made sure to get on the list for the early sale notice. I was very excited to read another one of Holtons books. When it arrived in my mailbox I immediately sat down and began to read it. I devoured this book in two sittings and then re-read it again. I was blown away. I shouldn't have been. It didn't contain anything that was surprising to me or any great revelations. You see, I raised my son as a single mother and I was delighted to read the very principles I raised my son with written in the pages before my eyes. It was no wonder my son was so taken by Holton's writings from the very first word he read. The principles and scriptures Holton outlines validated that I raised him right and also helped to shape him in to the man he would become. I am not claiming that I knew something more before Holton put his pen to paper, only that when you use "the timeless truths and wisdom and experience of mature men" to raise your boys, they will turn in to the "real men" that Holton describes. This book is absolutely NOT just for men to read, it is a MUST READ for single mothers as well. It worked for me and my son's story has now made it into two of Holton's books.I remain in close contact with several of my sons brothers in arms. I keep copies of A More Elite Soldier, Bulletproof and now Making Men to share with them whenever I get the chance. Every young man needs to read this book, apply to his own life and hold on to it until he becomes a father himself. I know first hand that every scripture, every principle and every ounce of wisdom that Holton cites turns boys into the men we are in such short supply of in todays world. I highly recommend this book. Read it once and then read it again. Memorize it, please. For the future of all men and women, please.

Every man, this man, should listen to and act on these wise words.
It's rare for me to read a book and not squirrel all over the place. This book was an easy read for me in part because I am ready to step up, Man UP, in life, but also because the style of writing was engaging and captured my attention. I trust it is NOT too late for my kids, but I could have left so many regrets behind if I started this journey in earnest when I first learned about this book and its warnings about passivity.

Men - have values, this helps you define them (and Ladies can learn some things, too)
I'm tying to figure out the best way to do a review of Chuck Holton's new book "Making Men". You may think that only fellows should read this, but that's not so. I'm a divorced, single mom. One of the main themes in this book is the value of valuing your wife and family. If you value your wife and children, I would really suggest that you read this book. And ladies - many of the managing life principles can be used by us, to make our life better; and to see if a fellow is a Man and not just a guy. It's worth reading, and re-reading.

I read it in 2.5 hours. I wish I had something like this to guide me while I was raising my son and daughter. Like most young parents I thought I knew it all. While my kids are wonderful people and I'm very proud of them both, I wish I would have had a book like this to use as a road map. Whether you are raising boys or girls I consider this book a must read. I gave it to my son on his 20th birthday.
