So far, good purchase
Old battery was bulging and pushing apart the casing. This was not expensive. It fits well, and so far has performed well. This allows me to continue using this ancient (in competent terms anyway) laptop and access some older programs. It is not name-brand but that is not needed; I needed a battery that simply was safe and working. I got both. Thanks!

Not quality, but functional
Got this battery for an old 2008 MacBook Pro that had it's old battery bloat beyond use. Unfortunately these 15" models have trouble starting up on all but the 85w charger without a battery. I checked the health of the battery after charging it for the first time and it had 94% health with one charge cycle. These are probably recycled cells. For a few days and charge cycles it behaved fine, but then began to drop to ~5% from ~40% or just shutting off with no warning. I'm not terribly bothered about it since it's just a means to keep the laptop alive for short periods between chargers, but if you're planning on using this regularly, keep in mind it may not last.

No good options
If, like me, you're trying to keep using a 12-year old MacBook Pro, the best option now is to just plug it in and use it without a battery. The OEM hasn't made batteries for these machines for at least 6 years, so if you find a genuine Apple battery, it will be at least that old so probably won't be worth the money. As cheap as these knock-offs are, they're not worth it either. This latest one shipped at (according to Coconut Battery) 86% of its original capacity. The last battery of this type I had lasted approximately a year before the computer started to show the "Service Battery" message, and at that point, initiating even the most pedestrian task - say, copying a file from the HD to a flash drive - would cause the machine to heat up and turn the fans on. A few months later, it did what all Li batteries eventually do - began expanding, rendering the mouse button "permanently clicked" until I removed the battery. I expect no better from this one.

That is probably a correct designation but a lot of us use Apple equipment longer than Apple would like. The battery fits the laptop perfectly
Apple no longer produces a battery for these models as they consider it an obsolete unit. That is probably a correct designation but a lot of us use Apple equipment longer than Apple would like. The battery fits the laptop perfectly. I have ran the battery through several cycles and it’s capacity has remained solid. Don’t expect 7 to 10 hours like a new Apple laptop. These models didn’t have that kind of runtime when new. 3 to 4 hours is normal depending on use.
