Q: what type of insulation inside?

If I remember correctly it is a hollow foil type insulation. It is not goose down insulated. Highly compressible but great bounce back memory.

Q: Is there an attached mosquito net around the opening?

The USMC 3 Season system does have the netting on the bivy, but unfortunately, this system does not.

Q: If you use a liner will it negatively effect the Temp rating ?

I used this type of sleeping system in the Marines in field and cold weather training in the snow. You have to strip down (completely) naked and you will need both the green and black sleeping bags if the temps are below 20 degrees...either way your not goings sweat if used properly. YOU (WILL) SWEAT if you keep all your cloths on transitioning from the cold into sleeping bags. The 3rd Gortex liner is used in any wet conditions including snow. This is the best sleeping system you can get and that includes the "SPECIAL OPS" one that you can buy on Amazon. LOL!!!!

Q: What is the difference between this 4 piece system for $195.95 and the 5 piece system for $315.90, as both are from the same manufacturer?

I have one. There's an inner bag (1) a middle bag (2) the bivy (3) the main compression bag (4) and a smaller compression bag for just the scout bag (I believe, maybe both) in warmer weather (5) Honestly, that compression bag floats around in my truck most of the time because all Ive ever used the mss for is winter.
