Review Teachers Pick - Best for learning Sight Words --Scholastic Instructor MagazineThis DVD is an animated teaching tool, not a cartoon show. I'll liken it to freshly squezed juice for a child vs. KoolAid! I am extremely picky about what my children view on any screen and Meet the Sight Words passed with flying colors. --The Old Schoolhouse MagazineThe basic approach of seeing, hearing and repeating is given a fresh look that makes learning easy for pre-readers and struggling beginning readers. A must-have for every collection for young children. --School Library Journal Review: Excellent videos for learning sight words - I bought these videos for my 2 1/2 year old and within about a month he knew all the words. I had purchased Your Baby Can Read for his 2nd birthday and he had mastered all the words on it in 5 months and I wanted to further his reading skills and found this series. He already knew letters, numbers, shapes and colors so I didn't need those but am sure they are also wonderful videos. The Meet The Sight Words series helped him learn the sight words for Kindergarten in a fun way and he found many of the scenes to be comical and wants to watch them over and over still 6 months later. By watching this video series he has learned sight words faster than my friend's 6 year old who is in Kindergarten. At 2 years old he knew more sight words than 2 children I knew who are both in Kindergarten! Their Mom's were not happy that a 2 year old knew more words than their 6 year olds. Your Baby Can Read gave my son a great foundation for reading skills and Meet The Sight Words built on those skills! I'm not saying you have to purchase Your Baby Can Read to make these videos a success I already owned it and wanted to find more similar DVD's to continue his reading skills, My cousin's 4 year old also loves Meet The Sight Words and her pre-k teacher can't get over how many words she knows before Kindergarten thanks to these videos. My son has special needs due to a brain hemorrhage at birth, he has Sensory isues, gross motor delays and a speech delay but these videos helped his speech delay because he wanted to say the words, because the word repeats several times he is hearing it more and tries to say the words with better success. His speech has dramatically improved. I highly recommend these videos to all children ages 2-5. Review: a great springboard to reading. my child likes it and it works - UPDATE: I had written a review before and I will keep it, but now that my son has turned 4 he asked one day out of the view these again. As I state below I do not find these entertaining but we sat together and we did the quizes aferward and he watched all three videos about 4 times. Two days later thinking nothing of this I was left a note by his AM preschool teacher to have my son read me a book she left, and while it was the most basic book one could find he did indeed sit and read me the book word for word. I still find these videos boring, tedius and I cannot believe my child had the interest to watch them but he did and he learned and he retained it. I would never force this video on my child, but he liked Meet the Letters and learned all his letters so I got these for him. He was very excited and by his own request watched them on and off all weekend. My son, age 3 has been insisting on watching one movie after the other and not the same one over and over again so his total intake is not as high as it was with meet the letters when he watched it over and over again (about 45 words in the set), but he definitely has picked up several words in a short time. As a parent watching these I find them tedious and torturous, but they seem to do what they are intended to do better than more entertaining videos and they hold my son's interest. I like that these are truly geared to what is taught and tested for as opposed to any old word a creative director could fit into a story. Another interesting thing is compared to other videos he seems to be able to retain these if showed the word elsewhere on paper. There are a few shows with similar content where he can shout out the word on the screen but can't identify the word in a real life scenario. The end of the video puts the words in sentences has a flashcard sequence.

Excellent Beginner Reader Program!
I started my daughter off on the "Your Baby Can Read Program" when she was 6 months. I begin to recognize that at the age of 1 she could recognize words from the program in written form and in books. I knew my daughter needed to be challenged more and she was ready to begin her journey of reading! I read a review from a parent who also started their child out on the "Your Baby Can Read" program when they were a baby and later purchased the series, "Meet The Sight Words". The reviewer mentioned that because her son had an early foundation from the "Your Baby Can Read Program" he caught on to the "Meet The Sight Words Program" right away. I thought just maybe my daughter will have similar results. I am enthused to report that not only did my daughter memorize the words from all three videos in less than 3 weeks but she is also reading! After purchasing the DVD's I decided to purchase the easy readers. She was so excited when she was able to read. She has also advanced and is reading other I can read, beginner reader books. My daughter loves the flash cards and takes them out several times a day so she can go over them! Parents, you can't lose in purchasing this program for your child. If you don't start now you will review these words with them when they start school. Why not get an early start? "Meet The Sight Words" will give your child confidence, a desire to read more, and a desire to learn more! My daughter is 2 and reading! Her littler sister is 9 months and loves this program. Its just a matter of time before she will also catch on. I recommend this program to any parent who desires for their child to have an early advantage in literacy skills! Amazing for kids, torture for adults
My son has been watching the first video of this box set for about a month. In that month, he has not only been able to learn to read all 16 sight words on this disc, but has also managed to learn to write about half of them, all without any supplemental instruction from me. The DVD shows the words in three stages, all of which I think reach different kinds of learners: bold black print, color print, and animated print. Bold black is just that... the word written in black block letters. Color print is the word in block letters, but of a color (such as orange, blue, etc). Animated print is the word caricatured. For example, the word "play" depicts each letter as a part of a mini-scene in a baseball game... the "p" is the batter, the "l" is the bat, the "a" is the glove and the "y" is the catcher. Or something like that... I forgot the details because after the first time watching it with my son I nearly lost my mind and bought him a portable DVD player with headphones instead. During these word animations on the screen, a voice repeats the words with a different inflection each time. It also alternates between male and female voices. Disc one for my son is complete, and he reads all of the words, and as mentioned before, writes many of them as well. I will be adding the second disc to his viewing regimen. The repetition is key. It's mind-numbing for us adults, but my son just sits in his room chanting "he, he, he, he.... of, of, of, of..." etc etc. I will also be buying the entire "Meet The ___ " collection if I can get a hold of it.

Good for Kindergarten classes and homeschoolers
While the DVDs are meant to be viewed by preschoolers, they do a fantastic job at capturing the attention of kindergarteners as well. I am a big proponent of phonics, but some words just do not follow the phonic rules; we call them sight words. The videos are animated in a way that repeats the information in a way that continues to capture the child's attention. For example, the word is repeated several times while changing the background. My only criticism is that the DVD does not play continuously, that is, you have to play each segment separately. It would be more convenient if the DVD has a "play all" selection. If you are homeschooling a beginning reader, then these are definitely worth the cost. They are a wonderful supplement to your lessons. DVD quality is also very good.

What is better than I love it?!!
I cannot recommend these videos enough! I love the whole preschool prep series! Why? These videos (while I think are incredibly boring) capture any kids attention. My kids (8, 7, 5, 4, 3) have learned all of their sight words before they enter school because of these videos. My 3 year old knows every sight word on these videos and can identify them in text! He started watching them when he was 18 months. I cannot take any credit, except for putting the video in (insert smiley face)! My youngest (by the time he was 2) knew all of his ABC's (phonics included), numbers, shapes, colors, and sight words. Now to defend myself because I know some people will judge that my child has consumed way too many hours in the TV. I keep these DVDs in my car. I played these DVDs everyday (M-Th) while I picked up my 5 and 4 year old from preschool. I needed something to keep my youngest from falling asleep in the car because I wanted him to take a nap at home and not in the car and these did the trick. The bonus was they were educational and he learned while watching them! Ironically they were the only thing that would keep him awake. If I put in anything else he would fall asleep. Now at 3 the same still holds true. Now when I put them in he likes to race his siblings to see who can say the word faster!

4 year old loves these and learned fast
These movies are great and priced way below other similar sight words movies. My 4 year 3 month old learned all the words on the first DVD in a little over a week of watching it once a day. The movies show the words doing something and say the word a million times then later they show the same clip but don't say the word until the end. After a couple of views my daughter was saying the word before they did. It was amazing. I highly recommend the books that go along with the video series. My daughter loves finding the words in the book as she is watching the movie and after a week and a half I can get books out of the set that she has never read and she will read all the words she learned in the video. The words she can't read she either guesses from the pictures or I help her with them. She can read about 90% of the words in the books and she loves them. She asks to watch these movies all the time and her confidence has soared. These movies and books are worth so much more than $10 or $15 each. Another feature I like is part of the video has a child voice read a story slowly one word at a time with highlighting. They also have a part where they do automated flash cards. My daughter loves the flash card game. I have bought over 3o educational DVDs and the only one that comes close to this one is "Signing Time". We also own "Your Baby Can Read" and I like this one much better becasue it teaches words that are used more frequently.

great buy, highly recommended
After having these products for less than a month I am happy to report that my 26 months old twins are able to recognize all the sight words on homemade flashcards. The boys are able to point out the sight words while we are reading as well as hand me the correct flashcard when asked each and every time. Learning these words has also helped them to learn to read and recognize other words on flashcards. They get excited when they see the cards and love to view all three of the dvds. This is a great buy and a great jumping off tool to get your child ready for reading. The graphics are fun and entertaining. This is a great product and I'm 100% happy with this purchase. Now I wish I had purchased it months ago. If you are interested in getting your child a head start to reading I highly recommend this product.

Best video for teaching sight words!
I showed my 26 month old these set of DVDs and I'm only a few days, she would point to the correct words when I showed it to her. In about 2 weeks, she could read almost all the words! She enjoys watching them and loves doing the flashcards. It's one of the best educational resource I've ever bought.
