Astonishingly prolix, overly systematic, insipid prose; sadism in the guise of academia
Though the authors are highly knowledgeable and this textbook is (somehow) esteemed, there is no value in this text, not for introductory students, nor grad students, nor film lovers, nor filmmakers. Every last thing in this book has been better-expressed elsewhere, in a fifth as many words- a fifth. Imposing this textbook on students is, without exaggeration, educational malpractice or an act of sadism. This is a case study on the difference between encyclopedic knowledge of a subject, on the one hand- and writing ability, teaching ability, and wisdom on the other. Many, many sentences in this book exist for no damn reason.

Really good read considering it's a textbook
This was assigned in my film history class; but I plan to read the whole thing again later, because it is not only informative but it's also a very good read. It's well organized and puts together a cohesive look at how films go together. I don't give it full marks because it does have the usual murky areas and overly textbook-ish spots. It's also way overpriced for something that isn't available new and yet is not a 'vintage' book.

Good book but very used.
Great textbook but both copies i ordered were very damaged used books. They were totally readable and useable and worth it for the price but if you buy used then expect a used book.

A great overview of filmymaking from the very start to the very finish, including elements of writing, artistic viewpoints and shooting movies.

Basically a necessity for Film students at university. The book is really detailed and almost all of it still applies to today's studies. Don't bother getting the new editions of the book, this one has everything you'll need.

Best Book in the World
As the title says, its the best. You wouldn't necessarily need the most recent edition unless your after more up to date examples and different information, but fundamentally this is great. Authored by the most well known authors this book will most definitely see you to a first class degree.
