Underrated Gem
A wonderfully poignant, intelligent and funny film. Based on the autobiographical writings and Award winning play by Hugh Leonard. A brilliant ensemble cast and a witty potrayal of family life in Ireland in the 1940s and 50s that doesn't fall into either 'The Quiet Man'type 'Oirishness' or the misery of 'Angelas Ashes'.Martin Sheen plays a sophisticated, successful and Americanised play-write who returns to Ireland for the funeral of his father, -'Da'. His fathers ghost escorts him through the past and present and a host of characters, including his younger self, are resurrected. And through it all is Barnard Hughes potrayal(Oscar nominated, I think) of his irrepressible father,a man who has to be one of the most stupidest yet lovable characters in recent film history.PS- For those who really liked this film , can I recommend the two autobiographical books by Hugh Leonard,- 'Home before Night' and 'Out after Dark'. These share much of the same characters as the play and are also infused with the same haunting magic. Additionally they are, at times, very 'laugh-aloud' funny!

enjoyable
I enjoyed this film. It's the story of a guy who gets a phone call that his Da has passed away and he goes home for the funeral. It's full of nostalgia and a trip down memory lane. It is not over sentimental and it will appeal to Irish people living abroad. However, I would not give it to persons who have lost a parent recently as it is too true...Martin Sheen is excellent in the role.

NOT Compatible In "All Regions"
The listing said two things: (1) Playable in All Regions, and (2) Can be mailed to the United States. Because I couldn't find in the U.S., and given those assurances, I ordered it. It arrived, but the box clearly indicates PAL format, not compatible with players in the United States, Canada, and Japan. So much for "All Regions". I'm aware the DVD is excellent, but since it will cost too much to return it, I'm stuck with it.
