great deterrent to keep you and your dogs safe
This has been PERFECT. We have two rottweilers on our daily walk that sometimes are out unattended and one likes to charge down the street after my dogs. I don't know if they mean to hurt them or us, but it is not safe and I'm not taking a chance. After I got this, one charged within days. I yelled NO about 10x but it kept coming. When it was about 3 feet away, i sprayed right for the face. The dog turned immediately and went home. As I walked past, feeling guilty, it was rubbing its face all over the grass. I saw it a few days later and it was fine. then about a month later, it charged us again, when we were walking with a friend and 2 other dogs. It went after her dogs so I got close and sprayed in front of it vs. on it. Must have had a memory because it seems when it got a sniff it left quickly. We turned around. So it doesn't seem to harm them when sprayed directly and was a deterrent when sprayed close (maybe because of the previous experience). I like that I can spray from several feet away. I think it would be good at even longer distances but I wanted to give it a chance to respond to my NO AND GO HOME.

It is a repellant, not a death ray
No, this product did not fully stop a determined dog. Yes, it and my Aussie did affect the dog enough for my leashed dog and I to walk away from the sulking dog. The silly dog hung around long enough (5 hours) for animal services to haul it away, armed with a mandatory court appearance for its owner. This is the second time I've used a pepper spray on an attacking dog. I purchased the first from a gun store and was made aware then that dogs are less affected than humans. The first product cost twice as much as HALT was far less spray. I will purchase a replacement HALT or two. From three dog attacks in an area with mandatory leash laws, I've learned this. Carry a camera or cell with camera. Set the camera to print the date on the print. Take photos first then spray when within 7 feet or so. Both products sprayed that far with a squirt gun like directed spray. Aim for the eyes. Do not spray your leashed dog. Do not intervene between the dogs unless you happen to like pepper spray. If your dog is unable to defend itself, carry a baton or stick too. Animal control folks, who do encounter this situation frequently, tell me that pepper spray will not be absolutely effective on a dog. It is a deterrent. A bullet is effective but not my preference, hopefully not yours either. Ignore reviewers who confirm the spray did not stop an attack. HALT states "use this product to repel". It does not say it Will Stop. I bought. I used sooner than hoped. HALT held more that another similar product for half the price. It sprayed. We walked away. Aggressor caught. Veni Vidi Vici. What's not to rate as 5 stars here? Side benefit: the red residue positively identifies the dog to animal control. Hard to see, perhaps, but the photo is of yesterday's loser. Red nose. Closed left eye. Now fed by taxpayers.

This Spray Works!
I bought a couple cans of Halt back in 2020 AFTER a dog attack on my dog and I. I never had used either can all these years (it is now 2025). Someone new moved into the neighborhood that I walk my dog in and their dog keeps jumping the fence and getting out. This new dog has bitten two other dogs in my neighborhood and has approached my dog a few times but the dog was ok. This morning however, the dog came charging full speed at my dog and I. Luckily I had brought my HALT dog spray on the walk. When the dog was 2 feet from my dog, I sprayed the dog with my can of HALT. (Thank goodness the can still worked after all these years of never using it!) Thank you HALT for your product. You saved my dog and myself from injury! IT WORKED! The dog did a quick reversal and walked away!

You better be pretty close to the face when you spray.
I purchased this to discourage the neighbor's small-breed dog from chasing me with bared teeth as I run by it's house. Everytime a dog chases you, whether you are running or on a bike or whatever, and it "chases you away" it reinforces the chasing behavior and the dog "wins". I was sure this dog would become emboldened enough to take a nip. I could see this coming and I neither wanted to get nipped or trip and fall trying to avoid this dog. This spray can is nice and small to tuck into shorts using the attached clip. It was easy to spray, but I was disappointed in the quality of the spray stream. It just arced out about 4 feet, not enough force to contact the dog and too short to get near him. By the way, be aware of the direction of the wind blowing when you spray...don't ask me how I know! :) By sheer luck, a little bit contacted the face of the dog (tiny moving target) and he merely shook his head a bit. For me, the spray didn't really work. I need something that shoots out with more force and distance. I'll keep looking and meanwhile hope that the dog is kept in the yard better.

Worked for me...
Unfortunately I had to use this today. It appeared to work. However it is a bit disconcerting that the sprayed dog did not seem in much distress. Not that I want to hurt a dog. I was walking my 2 dogs and got charged by a boxer looking dog. I kicked him back and sprayed him in the face with this. The orange stream was easy to direct. Dog stopped advancing and seemed startled. Then the owner grabbed him. Here is some advice. You need to walk with this in your hand. At first I had it clipped to me. I got charged by a dog that ran out of a door when the owner opened it. It happened so fast I could not grab it in time. Now I carefully wrap my 2nd dogs leash around my hand so I can carry it ready to spray. Good luck to all you dog walkers out there! Update: Got charged by two pugs the other day and they refused to be phased by my verbal commands. When the front one got within about 6 ft I sprayed it in the face. It slowed down or stopped then started advancing slowly. I sprayed it again making sure to hit the eye and nose. It stopped and the owner came out to get his dogs. I feel like this is a deterrent and carry a stick as a back up. Read you can use a stick to perhaps pry a dogs jaws apart as well. Luckily I haven't had to try out the stick yet... Update 2: Got charged from behind by some golden doodle looking dog loose in the neighborhood. Luckily someone called out to me just in time to boot that dog away and start spraying. Dog kept trying to engage my leashed reactive dog. I booted it away and continued to paint the dog orange while yelling at it to get back. I was ready to switch to the stick when the dog gave up and retreated. Still leaving 5 stars for now. I ordered 2 cans of EPA max 1% spray. If I need to use them I will update this review with a comparison. A couple drops got on my dog and I carefully washed it off with some no water shampoo. My Wife said the dog was still a little spicy though ๐ You could possibly get several uses out of the can but I always carry a fresh one. Update 3: Had to use the EPA max spray once so far. No noticable difference... REMEMBER THIS PRODUCT IS A DETERRENT!
