Has anyone successfully used this with Modbus?

Yes, used this successfully with a Python implementation of Modbus under Linux, to monitor distributed RS485-enabled controllers around a factory - installed approx 1 year, so far, and has been working well

Can you download the driver for this item from somewhere as my laptop does not have a cd drive?

Try downloading the driver for the upgraded version which DSD have released for this item - it now comes with Bluetooth capability but DSD say it still includes the original functionality. Upgraded driver is available from DSD support page for the SH-U10

I i have lost my cd - where can i find drivers. i have looked on the dsd web site and cannot see them.

dose exactly as stated, usb to rs485 only not about this project but try win zip driver utility on the web for drivers.
