Great Music from Martina McBride. The music today is just not as good as it was during the 90's. I miss those years and this cd takes me back their. Thank God for Music.

A different sound is a mixed blessing
Martina's voice is indescribably good, full of tremendous power and force, often leaving you mesmerized and blown away. In the last live performance I saw of hers, she got at least six standing ovations before I lost count. Her talent is without dispute. This album however, tends to tinker with the things that make her so good. After singing her heart out on the amazing "Evolution," Martina has toned down her vocals to a gentle simmer on these tracks. But to further change the mix, the songs all have a strange rock-ish sound. Think Sheryl Crow. They don't sound bad, mind you, just different. And to make it even more tragic, the songs all tend to sound vaguely similar, with the drums pushed out in the forefront. To further frustrate me, there are no clear singles here, save "It's My Time" (an incredible song that Martina took to the next level). "Anything's Better Than Feeling the Blues" and "Make Me Believe" are two other knockout tracks, but they're just out of the mainstream enough to not guarantee their chart success. This upsets me only because I see Martina consistently overlooked when it comes to awards and even airplay. "Evolution" was such a brilliant performance, and indeed a brilliant album, that when it was overlooked, it was downright maddening. Rather than turn up the heat here, Martina and co-producer Paul Worley decided to change direction a bit. And I don't know that I am entirely sure about that. But as always, I wish her luck.Listeners who come here looking for another "A Broken Wing" or "Independence Day" might be disappointed. But if they come simply to hear the magnificent power and delicacy of Martina's voice, this album probably won't disappoint.

A great pop album
I became a fan of Martina's music following the release of her very first album. It wasn't a huge success but subsequent albums generated ever-bigger sales as the public realized what a great singer Martina is. With this album of pop music, Martina almost abandoned her country roots (they show here and there) and was rewarded with a major American pop hit (I love you, which also spent a month at number one on the country charts), giving her plenty of new fans while retaining many of the fans that she already had. I don't mind what kind of music people record as long as the quality is there and this is definitely a quality album. The outstanding song (to my ears) is a country song - This uncivil war, written by Gretchen Peters about a family suffering hard times. Gretchen has written many great songs, not only for Martina (including her breakthrough song Independence day) but also for Trisha Yearwood and many others, as well as recording three of her own albums. Another excellent song, written by country tunesmiths Matraca Berg and Randy Scruggs, is Anything's better than feeling the blues. There are plenty of other great songs here, especially among the ballads. My favourites include I love you, Love's the only house, Anything and everything and For the love of a woman.Martina is a class act who proved with this album that she can sing pop music as well as country music. This is not my favorite among her albums (that honor goes to Wild angels) but if you love Martina's voice, you will probably enjoy this album.

Emotion
EMOTION, Martina McBride's fifth release (not counting her Christmas CD), is a fine collection of songs that show off the singer's magnificent voice. McBride's vocal range gets a real workout, from the restrained prettiness of "There You Are" and "Good Bye" to the powerful, emotion-packed readings of "From the Ashes" and "This Uncivil War." McBride, who is known for believe-in-yourself, strong-woman anthems like "Independence Day" and "A Broken Wing," offers a couple more here, "Do What You Do" and "It's My Time." The latter is one of the strongest performances on the CD.Though EMOTION is a country album, two of the tracks seem designedfor pop crossover success. "I Love You," first heard on the RUNAWAY BRIDE soundtrack, is a song that has the same feel and lyrical wordplay as Faith Hill's career-making smash, "This Kiss," while "Anything and Everything" is a mid-tempo love song that would fit right in on any soft rock radio station. The most unusual track on the album is "Love's the Only House," a song that sports a catchy chorus despite its serious social message.

Evolution
