The kids love the information!

There is no publisher around that does a better job of packaging quality information in fun and visually exciting books than DK. They rule in this market and there's no close second. And this book is a perfect example of how they've mastered the art of sharing a lot of valuable (and interesting!) information in a minimal number of words and filling the pages with great and often inspired artwork. Divided primarily into two-page spreads that profile important scientists and their accomplishments, the text and illustrations not only tell you why a particular scientist is worth reading about, but also what inspired them, in whose footsteps they followed and what modern scientists followed in their paths. Fantastic. There is also a succinct paragraph for most explaining how their work changed the world. The book is a great flip book and you can literally open it to any page and start reading. One little gimmick that I like is that there are cartoon balloons coming out of portraits of the scientists with first-person facts about their lives. For Galileo Galilei, for example, it says, "By the way,..I was the first person to use a telescope to look at the solar system and record my observations." And next to Alessandro Volta's portrait, it says, "By the way...Impressed by my demonstration of the battery, French emperor Napoleon I made me a nobleman." That is such a cool way to personalize these great achievers. Kids reading that feel like the subject is speaking directly to them. In a way it's a shame that a lot of these DK books are described as children's books because I think that readers of any age would enjoy them and learn a lot from them. With the invasion of so much digital information in our lives most of us have shorter attention spans and less free time and these DK books are always a fast but fact-filled read. And they are made of paper which, for me as a writer, is a great thing. One thing that I think is missing from the book are birth and death dates. While the birth dates are noted for most subjects, there are no death dates and I'm always curious about how long they lived. Also, while there were quite a few women scientists profiled, the omission of Maria Merian (the first person to reveal the secrets of the metamorphosis of the butterfly/caterpillar in the 1600s) bothered me. Young girls need to see that women have been major contributors to science and the study of natural history for centuries. I love this book and, feeling a bit like Will Rogers, I can say that I've never seen a DK book that I didn't like.

This is a great book for all ages. I got this to use with my girls troop and so glad I did. This book is wonderfully balanced in its representation of women in science, even the ones who were slighted for credit. We all know Marie Curie but what about Rosalind Frankiln? You know, the woman who helped crack the DNA code? No, never heard of her? Well, her lab partner stole the the picture she took that was the vital piece of the puzzle & gave it to another set of lab partners who, with her partner, got the credit and the Nobel Prize. Crime may not pay for bad behavior but apparently the Nobel Prize does. Like I tell my girls "Well behaved women rarely make history" Why wasn't she credited on the Nobel Prize, even though the information was publicly known? Bc even a life altering discovery can not be credited after you've passed away. This information is all shared in easy to follow terms but be prepared for the "Why" questions. Every person in this kid friendly book, from Carl Sagan to Leonardo DaVinci, has changed our world. Even when kids don't know who they are, they will see the bigger picture Such as DaVinci wasn't only a master artist, he was a scientist ahead of his time with sketches of a propellor driven flying machine. That's right, a helicopter. The pages are colorful with short paragraphs of varied information & lively illustrations. Very visually stimulating , not just for a young mind but any mind that is overwhelmed by science. I love that the book is honest and age appropriate starting at about 8. I guarantee, and I rarely say that, you will find many incredibly fascinating things you can't believe you didn't know. Plus, the enjoyment of the wide eyes of a young face realizing possibilities of the world are endless .

This book is a great way of learning about science and different scientists! The way the information is presented to you, combining the text with great pictures keeps you and your kids engaged and wanting to read and learn more about it. Book uses a couple of pages for each subject and in those pages they are able to present you with a lot of information. Book is divided in four or five sections and has a great selection of physicists, biologists, pioneers, etc... Since I have a little daughter I appreciate the fact that it does include several important women in the world of science! Like I said before, author uses a couple of pages for each personality but in those pages he is able to include a lot of information about them; what made them famous, what kind of work they develop among other things. All the photos and images bring these stories to life while keeping your interest. One piece of information that I feel is lacking in the book is the absence of a date of birth/death for each scientist. In my opinion it is an important piece of information that is missing and that could help you realize when they did their work. Overall it is a great book, not only for kids but also for adults!

I brought 3 books from Dk-100 events that made history,100-sceintists and 100 inventions.Once the book delivered from that day my kids showing very much interest in these books. Daily at least I need to explain 2 chapters in each book. The pictures which they are depicted in a good way made them to get interest in it and know more about the topics. First I buyed scientist they showed interest and they only asked me to buy other books from the backside of book ,so I brought other .When they are free they use to open the book .They will say they want to know more about that and they will ask many questions and asks me to explain that. I am very happy they showed curiosity and interest in reading books for knowing inventions, scientist or history. My elder kid says these are all best books he likes it very much. It made me very happy. Thanks for DK publications

This was meant as a present for kid, but I found myself browsing through it and looking for new facts about well knows and less well known scientists. The pictures are also great. Kept me very entertained.

A great book for children and not only! In one place are gathered all the important people and their achievements. Colorful pictures and key text help to quickly memorize important dates and events. My recommendations 10 of 10.
