Q: Q1 - Does it have a long exposure mode? Q2 - I am looking to capture the northern lights with it, do you think its capable?

Yes it has a Bulb exposure mode. This keeps the shutter open for as long as you want. See page 98 of the manual. You will need a cable release, they are very cheap around £5.

Q: How do you transfer images from this camera to a Samsung Chromebook? (bear in mind I can't install software on this laptop) Is there a USB cable? Thx

You need software through the Chrome apps then you can put the card in the side slot it as the same as you get in Boots

Q: With this camera can you change the depth of field, aperture and shutter speed? And is it recommended to a beginner with limited camera knowledge?

This is a very good camera for a beginner,it has all the stuff a pro uses but at a good price.It saves you having to change to a more expensive camera as you improve.

Q: can it be used as a webcam

Sorry do not have a clue. Webcams are cheap to buy anyway.
