A lovely sequel
Charles Tritton was Johanna Spyri's English language translator and he also wrote two sequels to the familiar and well loved Swiss classic. This is the first of them and there is also "Heidi's Children". They are well crafted in the style of the original and really satisfy your need to know "what happened next" after the last chapter in "Heidi" entitled "Promises to Meet Again". It's such a shame they're no longer in print!

Heidi Grows Up
My grand daughter and I really enjoyed reading this together. She had very much enjoyed "Heidi" despite its rather old fashioned sentiments and thought this was better. Somehow the story endures throughout generations and appeals to young girls today. Since then we have read the last story "Heidi's Children", also by Charles Tritton, Johanna Spyri's translator, which she has liked even more, since it finally explains the grandfather's mystery. This second one follows Heidi from her school days to her finding her way back to her beloved Swiss mountains and I would recommend it to girls of about 9.Carol Ross

Heidi grows up - Charles Tritten
Of course, the original book, "Heidi" was written by Joanna Spyri, but as she declined the requests to write a sequel, it fell to Tritten, who had translated "Heidi" into English, to try his hand at meeting the popular request. Not surprisingly, the style matches that of the first volume perfectly, and as he made use of material from Spyri, the episodes follow on in character. Though well into my second childhood, I am a lover of the Austrian and swiss alps and know something of the life in the mountains. I therefore enjoyed this book, seen through adult eyes, but my grand-daughter aged ten (who has also climbed to huts in the Austrian alps) enjoyed it as well. A little old-fashioned, but a lovely story never the less.
