Great Addition to the Series
* Since completing the game I have updated this review * After reading all of these negative reviews, I delayed purchasing this game several times. But after a friend telling me it's worth giving a go, I decided to bite the bullet. I have to say that I'm glad I did. I'm not sure what planet some of these other reviewers are on - but this is a great game. It drops us into a new take on the Silent Hill genre, whilst keeping tightly hold of some of the things we've come to expect (and love). The atmosphere of each level is top notch. Not too many baddies roaming around - silent, ghostly streets - as Silent Hill has us accustomed to. Superb graphics and cutscenes, brilliant sound effects, music, atmospheres, it has night and day sequences and amazing weather dynamics. You feel compelled to hide away indoors whenever it rains, which was exactly what the designers wanted. Unlike most of the other games in the series, you get a lot of indoor space to explore too. You even get a subway that you can use to speedily access parts of the city. This is useful since this is the biggest Silent Hill world so far. There's LOADS of side-quests, all with their own eerie charm. Whether it be finding a lost child on her way home from school, or scattering a dead man's ashes by the lake - you've got a lot to do. The combat was criticised a lot by reviewers and I do agree that it has problems. It's a little clunky - and the range of beasts is quite limited. But your character can take a fair few wallops before he dies and there's plenty of medi-packs scattered around to help you along. Also, pretty much anything can be used as a weapon! Rocks, wooden planks, axes.. Even a lamp or chair! Each have their pros and cons. As with all Silent Hill games, you're in for an eerie twist at the end, which is reflected against the in-game decisions you've made. I have to admit that this ending stuck with me for a while and had me contemplating various events from throughout the game. Overall, it's a great exploration game, with a reasonable story and great graphics. Although it's not TOO scary (although it has its moments).

such a great game
After finally getting a copy from my local game shop because musicmagpie screwed me over i was at first sceptical due to the bad reviews and negativity this sh game got but that all soon changed it plays very different to any other sh games yet feels very right the combat is more brutal with more crude weapons such as fire axes hammers and kitchen knifes so when you engage in combat it feels very brutal and gory and some how adds to the feel of the main game you are a fighter and can use your fists if you wish so you feel like you have the chance to defend yourself even if unarmed on to the main game it Being free roam is very odd at first as an old school sh player it was very hard to get used to but when i did it just made the game all that more better side quests are cool as i love doing all in other sh titles that give weapons or a new ending this added more to the story and added many more hours on to my gameing experience just this is how sh should of evolved if you haven't played it yet then you should

Interesting game with problems.
I was pleasantly suprised by this game after hearing bad stuff about it. Personally, It's my favourite Silent Hill game since the sencond and third ones (and I'm not so much of a fan of the third one to be honest). What really does it for me is how the story progresses. It feels a bit like it did in the second game, which is just great in my opinion. It's far from perfect, however. The four stars is because of the storyline and exploration feel to it. Now the things i do not like so much.. *Optimization. Not good, not good at all. Choppy when it loads new areas and stuff like that. Feels broken that way. *Enemies - They get a 2/5 from me for the most part. They just aren't that scary or well made, feels a bit cheap. *Sidequests - Meh. Dunno about them, personally i could have done without i think. Those things may seem like a big deal, especially the enemy part. To me it doesn't matter as much since the storyline is really great. If you agree with me that story and exploration is probably the most important. If you are the adventure game type, then you will probably enjoy it. Otherwise, It's not worth more then three stars.

Ok not a classic
Well I've played most of the silent hill titles, Downpour shines in parts but is disappointing too.. Good Points: - The game captures the classic Silent Hill visual style quite well - Good voice acting - Plenty of side side missions to keep you interested - Lots of different weapons available Bad Points: - Combat still feels stiff - Underwhelming sound design - Persistent frame rate issues. (For me it happened very frequently and to an extent completely spoiled the experience) Overall: A solid game with a typically twisted story underneath all of the pretense. Still the gameplay mechanics are starting to show their age and there is a lack of genuine shocks and intrigue, it feels like familiar ground, albeit fairly well made familiar ground.

What a disappointment.
I can't review this game as a gamer who has completed it simply because it is unplayable to anyone expecting quality. This game is glitchy, choppy, out of sync and a complete let down to hardcore SH fans and prospective fans of the series. I almost want to ring the developers and demand my money back. Also, before anyone asks if it's my copy, it isn't. I have tried 8 different copies in a desperate bid to play this game and to no avail. Friends & family have attempted too. We have been begging for a decent patch in ps3 land & nothing...not a bit of it. Until news of a patch that fixes the game play, I cannot in good conscience give this any more than one star. I urge you not to buy this 'til then & instead opt for the HD Collection or Homecoming. The latter isn't great, but it's been properly done.
