RIVERS MAVIS
J**E
Is it Ella? Is it Sarah? Is it Doris? It's Mavis!
Mavis Rivers, the Samoan singer who never really took off in America, on this album, her first for Reprise, sounds like a cross between Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, with a bit of Doris Day thrown in for good measure. As inspirations go Mavis could have done a lot worse, and if originality is not your prime concern there is much to enjoy here. On the earlier Capitol twofer she is backed by Nelson Riddle in all his lush glory, on "Swing Along With Mavis" she is accompanied by Van Alexander on a Riddle kick, on this, rather more jazzy album, we find her in the company of the redoubtable Marty Paich and his dektette. Short, tasteful solos heat things up considerably, Mavis even scats with the best of them on It Don't Mean a Thing, but there is also room for introspection in a number of lovely balads. So a very nicely balanced album. The only niggle is the fact that in a little over 30 minutes the fun is over.
