TOOL for reference, not for "learning EVERYTHING from the ground up"
book arrived fine. This "Core Book" is claiming to be an "essential" in its own words to learn to play Killteam, HOWEVER, as someone who was COMPLETELY brand new to tabletop Warhammer 40k, and while i did find good middle section explaining BASIC fundamentals: such as movement/climbing/cover/shooting, I found this book egregiously lacking in questions as a player getting started, and acted almost like a catalogue to advertise more of its products(models/terrain/box sets) ... so to alleviate that, i will guide NEW players looking to start playing Killteam:1st, this book has the fundamentals as mentioned above, so if you really need to have a book with the CORE rules, find them online and print them out... wayy cheaper and less annoying.it does not go into depth on what players may not know starting out unless they're flipping pages from pg.36 mentioning "strategic gambits" to explaining EVERYTHING ELSE before mentioning on pg. 54 "all strategic ploys are considered strategic gambits", so be prepared to hear a lot of terminology the book goes by without explaining immediately what it is.2nd, i was new but now have a better understanding of how to play and what i SHOULD have bought to start playing:firstly, you will need a killteam, as they come with tokens for abilities they may have(which could just be printed/drawn), secondly, either purchase or craft your own "equipment" as there is NO MENTION of the EQUIP phase of the Set-up portion of the game, not until the VERY back of the book with no explanation. (other than "ladders, etc.")thirdly, DATA CARDS OR, print out the data sheets from your specific killteams, these will come with the "strategic ploys"/"equipment" options that will be needed before the start of the game.finally you'll just need terrain/board and dice.Killteam has "universal equipment" for all teams as well as "unique equipment" specific to killteams for setting up with terrain, the CORE book mentions none of these options, however they sell a seperate "equipment upgrade" pack that has all the universal equipment models. MOST KILLTEAMS come with tokens of these options EXCEPT ladders. to alleviate any more possible confusion, i will list universal equipment: ammo cache, razor wire, ladders, mines, light barricades, heavy barricades, portable barricade, comms device.I'm new to tabletop Warhammer, but from what i've noticed, GW is charging a premium for the bare minimum, and is drip feeding content/information on accessibility, since i seem to not be able to find all the INFO i need to actually play without scouring the web or PURCHASING/PRINTING out some $30 laminated data cards/$55 corebook/$40 "equipment".... PLUS TERRAIN!! and that's just Killteam!! Combat Patrol/40k requires a Codex which is essentially the same.. bare minimum info, half advertising their other products.BOTTOM LINE, if you're going to be NEW and looking to get started, THIS will be an advert as much as it is an asset, so if any suggestions, TRY and find a Starter Set/box ... they come with MORE basic beginner friendly rules/setup. this core book will seemingly help the you more you understand the game, not the other way around, such as for referencing core fundementals.. not for info on HOW to start/setup ... basically $55 is ridiculous for the content. unless you like pictures Killteam being played.75% pictures of killteam/adverts for other products, 25% basic board fundamentals
