Q: Can this work on soft metal like lead?

It worked with sonoran iron wood...I'd guess yes on led or soft metal. Mount posts are sketchy but it's a solid machine.

Q: can you use this to make bedpost legs?

No. This lathe is entirely too small for bedpost legs. This is for very small projects like chess pieces or something like that.

Q: Can this be used for pen turning?

The lath is more of a polisher or sander. The tool rest is not wide enough to really do pen work. And all wood in the chuck would pe waste.
