Would this be a good backpacking bag?

It doesn’t have the best back support for backpacking. It is great for shorter hauls (less than 3 miles) thru an urban environment.

Seems to be mixed opinions, but does the large splitpak work as a carry-on? The dimensions appear to exceed the carry-on maximum restrictions.

It is definitely not small enough to be considered a carry-on if you're required to place it in the storage bin in a standard fashion. I had to place it in sideways because it was too long but I was okay because the flight wasn't full. You may have to check it at the gate if you don't check it at the ticketing desk. It can hold a lot and I love it so far but I may consider buying the smaller size so I can carry it on without issues. By the way, it was a Southwest flight and their overhead storage bins are usually huge.

Is the large size carry-on approved?

I tried to bring this as a carry-on a few times and the airlines did NOT approve it and had me check it in.

Does it pack have compression straps

No. The pack basically splits in half with the zipper and each side has a zippered cover to keep the contents in place when opening.
