why did the price on this just triple?

It's not $40 shipping. It's free Prime delivery. Got mine 11 days after ordering.

How can you spin the display so you can read it yourself, versus the way it is set up for a caregiver to read it?

You can't...however I am able to read upside down too. As well as you can put your fingers down into your palm of the hand and then face the fingers and palm towards you so you can watch and get a good reading that way as well.
