I am 14 to 15 stone. Could I stand on this empty box or would it break?

Hi, I would not recommend standing on the box.

Is it possible for the lid to remain upright when opened, or does it naturally fall flat?

The lid remains upright when opened, it doesn't fall flat.

Has anyone used this successfully as a laptop pochade for plein air acrylic painting (I would tape in canvas board and make a palette to fit). Thanks.

Whilst not as a pochade, I used it to make a box for storing dice for tabletop games, and I would say you could, but you would need to add better hinges or supports to hold the lid at the correct angle. Likewise you’ll probably want to add some latches or a clasp to keep it closed when needed.
