Incredible Jazz Guitar
D**.
the name says it all
Wes Montgomery was perhaps best known for the commercial, orchestrated, easy-listening albums he put out after the demise of Riverside, but it is his earlier work with that label that earned him his reputation as one of the great jazz guitarists of all time. And this package - three original Riverside albums in one - includes enough material to confirm that this reputation is well deserved.:So Much Guitar! is the one I like most - in addition to the quartet of guitar, piano, bass (Ron Carter) and drums, it features Ray Barretto on conga which really intensifies the groove, especially on the two opening tracks, Twisted Blues and Cotton Tail. And Wes's playing is outstanding throughout.Second best is The Incredible Jazz Guitar of WM - same instrumentation as So Much Guitar (minus the congas) and a generally very modern sound. Stand-out tracks include Airegin and the Montgomery original Four on Six.Lastly, there is Movin' Along, a more conservative set with the usual instrumentation (albeit with different personnel each time) plus James Clay on flute and tenor sax. This set has a traditional flavour which is not always to my taste and can sound a bit dated - except on Tune-up and a delicious rendition of Ghost of a Chance. All in all, a great package, both as an introduction to Wes Montgomery and as a collector's item that includes some of his finest work.
