Q: I think the original material is more foam than rubber. These may be sturdier, but do they cause sound distortion.?

Amazon carries several products made specifically for this purpose - look near the bottom of the product listing page for the Bluecell edge surround rings. Contact cement, available at most hardware stores, also works well. I had an open can of contact cement, so that's what I used. Tip - practice aligning the two surfaces, surround and speaker, a few times before applying the glue. When it's time to glue, attach the cone and surround first, then glue and attach the surround to the speaker frame.

I also used 91% rubbing alcohol "sparingly" on anything left behind, Q-Tip and wet the Foam still attached to cone "sparingly" until wet and few seconds later the old stuff will come right off with a straight/blunt edge even, let remnants still on frame itself soak a little, then it all came off easily as well. 91% is great, dissipates fast and easily without leaving any traces behind to discolor or break down the cone at all, and used correctly can remove everything you want gone! I was told long ago when we did a lot of speaker repairs and many other repairs/refurbishing, Prep is just as important as install, perfect prep. perfect surface to work with! I say that because I saw a video on a person doing this and he was not worried about any residue or glue lines etc... left behind since it would be covered, Holy Crapple Sticks! Only one way to get a perfect looking finish, Perfect prep!!!!!!
