The title of my review comes from the following quote by Mr Justice Peter Jackson: "Lastly, I wanted to tell you that your dad and I enjoyed finding out that we both love the film My Cousin Vinny, even if it might be for different reasons. He mentioned it as an example of a miscarriage of justice, while I remember it for the best courtroom scenes in any film..." I have removed the last line of the quote to avoid a spoiler! Mr Justice Peter Jackson is a judge in the family court in England and the above quote was taken from a letter he wrote to a 14-year-old-boy who was subject to a custody dispute between his parents. The letter is an excellent read and is published for free on the BAILII (British and Irish Legal Information Institute) website, for anyone interested in reading it. Being a law graduate I have an interest in most things law-related and I'm also a big film buff so when I saw the endorsement for this film I purchased it immediately. It's difficult for me to confirm whether the film does indeed have the best courtroom scenes in any film, as I can't recall watching that many films with courtroom scenes; however this is a very good film and I'm glad I purchased it. The film is about two friends who are wrongly arrested for the murder of a shop assistant and they initially confess their guilt to the police believing that they have been arrested for shoplifting, which one of them was guilty of. There's a subsequent trial and one of the friends has a cousin called Vinny, who arrives to defend them. Unfortunately for the two friends, Vinny is a personal injury lawyer who has only been practicing law for 6 weeks and he has no experience whatsoever in criminal trials. Hilarity ensues as Vinny tries to navigate his way through the case with the assistance of his girlfriend Mona Lisa. The film is very funny in parts and made me laugh-out-loud on several occasions-Marisa Tomei is excellent as Mona Lisa, for which she received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The film also gives a good insight into how miscarriages of justice can occur and the trial process-the calling of witnesses, expert testimony and so forth. I discovered the letter by Mr Justice Peter Jackson on Twitter and I also learnt on Twitter that apparently the film is recommended to law students in America for having realistic court scenes. You don't need to have any interest in law to be able to enjoy this film but if you are a law student or someone practicing in law, I'm sure you will enjoy it even more so!
