Dependable and Affordable Telephone Coupler
These are among the work horses of the broadcast industry. The design is passive, which means that there is no active (electronic) amplification adjustment. This is really not a problem because the device that you connecting to is most likely designed to work with the audio level outputting this coupler. They are built rugged with quality components housed in a durable metal case. While they are not a fancy and flashy solution, they are a reliable and affordable solution when you need to tap into the phone audio to feed another device such as a audio mixer or recorder. We've used these for years with no problems. They work well with both old (analog) and digital phones. If the phone has a "handset" connection you are in business.

Not what I needed
I thought that the THAT-1 would fill the bill for my needs of conducting an interview over telephone lines with an online radio station. I was using Shure microphones and a small mixer. It was my idea to create a remote interview site that I could use for future interviews in promoting my projects. It was my mistake that it wasn't capable of interfacing properly with my equipment. I returned it and upgraded to the THAT-2 and was very pleased with the results. THAT-1 just wasn't up to the level of quality for my needs. It may work well in a less demanding situation. However the THAT-2 gave profession level performance that was still reasonably priced. So if the THAT-1 isn't that good, the THAT-2 is definitely that much better.

Fantastic quality. Well designed, well built, delivers excellent sound quality.
Fantastic quality. This is well designed, well built, and delivers excellent sound quality from the phones I have tried. I've had a couple of these for about 8 years. I came across this Amazon listing because I just recommended the device to a friend and wanted to send her a link for buying it. The phone I'm using it with at home is the Panasonic KX-TS880B Integrated Corded Telephone, a very good phone available from Amazon for about $40. Some years ago when I worked at a big company, the THAT-1 worked well with my office phone. I'm using only the audio output, so I can't tell you about the input.I'm recommending this to my friend instead of the much cheaper JK Audio QT Quicktap Telephone Handset Audio Interface because I have experience with this one and also because I love having the volume control. It's easy to adjust during a call and very smooth, an indication of the very high quality of this device.I'm hearing impaired and I use this to help me hear better on the phone. Originally I input the audio to a compressor and a graphic equalizer with output to high-quality Sennheiser cordless headphones. Great sound quality! More recently, I've connected the output from the THAT-1 to the input jack on the Phonak ComPilot I wear, which streams the audio right into my hearing aid. Even better. This is the best I can ever hear on the phone. This week I switched to a wireless setup, connecting the THAT-1 to the audio input jack on the base station of a Phonak Roger Clip-On Mic, which transmits digitally using the Roger protocol to a tiny Roger X Receiver plugged into my ComPilot. Again, right into my hearing aid, but without the inconvenience of dragging a cord from the ComPilot.

Only works with certain phones.
Be aware that this will not work with all telephones. Seems like only a very narrow phone type will work properly.Basically, your phone needs to have an electret mic in the handset for this to work. I could not even find what type of mic my phone has by reading the manual. Audio quality is HORRIBLE if you don't have the right kind of phone.Seems like a cool box if you have a phone that will work.I returned this and have a THAT-2 on the way. It has a 3-position switch for different phone types.
