Fantastic Vietnamese Coffee Maker, Excellent Design, Nice and Flavorful, Bold Cup of Coffee!
This Vietnamese screw-down phin filter takes a little practice to dial in, but once you get the hang of it, it’s absolutely fantastic. I chose the threaded press design specifically so I could tamp the grounds down similar to an espresso puck, and it works beautifully once you understand the nuances. You only need a small amount of coffee to produce a very concentrated brew, just add a few scoops of your grounds, gently compress with the screw plate, pour in hot water, and let it drip like a slow pour-over. While the filter holes can handle finer grinds, I’ve found a medium to slightly coarse grind (drip or french press range) allows for better flow and more consistent extraction. I like to bloom it first, then slightly loosen the plate before filling it fully with water. The result is a bold, rich cup that lands somewhere between espresso and moka pot strength, and it can easily be diluted to around 16 oz while still staying flavorful and robust. The size is perfect for personal use or sharing with a friend, and all in all, it’s an authentic, well-designed brewer that delivers excellent results at a great price. Definitely worth recommending!

Really Good but not the best
Totally LOVE this filter for iced Vietnamese coffees!! Brew time seems long, maybe the inner part was too tight? It is a bit hard to adjust the inner section, especially if you put water in it and realize the filter is too tight. Not only will it be hot (metal in hot water, duh) but slippery.

this is the one you want
buy this, some cafe du monde and the squeeze bottle of longevity brand. the screw down design is mandatoy. it helps to pack the grounds and keeps it from lifting up. the size of this one is just right for single serve. i had a bigger one with a press down and this one is WAAAAAAAAAAAAY better.

Great for 10 bucks
I actually did not get what I was expecting, although that was my lack of understanding of the options to select from. I do not regret what I wound up with however. For 10'ish bucks, the quality is pretty impressive, the only cheap feeling part being the heat retention lid which has some less than smooth edges. I was hoping to tinker around with it, and besides using as directed, I wanted something to double as a metal pour-over to stick a paper filter into. As it turns out, there is a metal screw fused to the inside that keeps me from forming a cheap filter to the inside, which isn't present on the other choices. I can't find an effective way to use a filter with it, but that's not what this was designed for anyway, it would just have been a bonus if it did. However for the intended purpose the screw on model I got has it's benefits, The dispersal screen rotates into place on this screw, and allows you to better hold the coffee in place for the Vietnamese style, rather than a loose screen that just sits on top and can tilt or shift as you use it. The dispersal screen's shaft rotates very smoothly onto the screw, and has pits to help you grip and turn it. If you turn it too much and it gets stuck, it has something like a flathead screwdriver notch so you can use anything with a flat edge to loosen it. The screw shaft may limit you on the volume of coffee that can fit, since it's a bit shallow. If you grind too much you may be unable to press it down far enough to screw it on. I also worry that coffee grinds will get stuck in the shaft of the dispersal screen over time. I think if they drilled the hole all the way through the shaft, it would let you rinse any grinds out or poke it out with a bent paperclip. The biggest grievance I have with the product, however, is the STICKER ON THE METAL CUP. The sticker is not designed to simply be peeled off. It tears and leaves glue behind when you do, and at that, it's one of the worst stickers I have ever had to peel off a product. I probably spent 2 hours trying to wipe the residue off. Even if you intended to leave the sticker on, one wash starts to erode it and makes it feel and look bad. Its basically unlaminated paper on glue. Furthermore, WHY is it even on the thing? Even if you saw it on a shelf and opened the box to look inside, it has the same information on the outside of the box. Its like putting a sticker on a toaster that says "Hey! I'm a friggin' TOASTER!" Someone is paying extra to put this on and it serves no purpose other than to make the customer do extra work to remove it.

Works great, looks great, with a few minor caveats
These filters are great for making drip / pour over coffee in general, not just Vietnamese coffee. Many of the problems in the poor reviews are due to the fact that this is a manual system that requires practice. For one, don't use a fine grind which will clog the system. Secondly, always start with a small amount of water to prime the brew chamber, otherwise a suction may form between the brew chamber and plate which prevents the bottom plate from draining (lifting the brew chamber from the plate removes the suction). Thirdly, tightening the press results in a stronger coffee but slows the drip, so you need to get used to the amount of pressure and coffee to make the perfect brew. Otherwise this is an excellent system and the stainless steel looks great in any modern kitchen. My only (small) caveats are there are some sharp edges esp. on the inside of the lids that I had to file down, and a few (two or three) unpunched holes here and there.

Espresso dripper
I bought this dripper in May of '22 & it is still working like a dream. I use it to make espresso, dark roasts and iced coffees. Super easy to clean and store. Great product.

Perfect for a reusable pour over.
Perfect alternative to pour over. I don't mind the grounds at the bottom. I just throw out the last bit at the bottom. The coffee is delicious and the maker is easy to maintain. I just knock out most the grounds and rinse out the remaining bits.

OK, but poor design makes it messier than it needs to be.
I had a hard time coming up with a star rating for this. On one hand, it seems well made, was well packaged, and it works as advertised. However, this (and many others I see on Amazon) has a very significant downside. Specifically, the "saucer" or "cup adapter" whatever you wish to call it, has many tiny holes just like the phin itself. These holes need periodic cleaning otherwise the coffee will back up on top of the saucer and overflow. (You may notice some 1-star ratings here, people complaining that it worked once or a few times and now it spills all over the table.) Also, undrained coffee puddles up here leaving a few messy drops. I wish I could find a phin like I used in Vietnam where the saucer device was more like a doughnut, with a *big* hole in the middle. Or, like a big honking "fender washer" if you are a hardware guy. So, downside is that this is a bit messy and will get messier as time goes on unless you go to a lot of extra cleaning effort poking all the dozens of holes with a toothpick.

Excellent coffee filter
Works perfectly with my Vietnamese coffee powder. I think people should use this more since it’s eco friendly because there’s no need to buy paper filters. Less waste, less trash, better for the environment. It’s also very portable, great for hiking or camping. The water flow can be adjusted somewhat, but I think it will work well with all strong bodied coffees. Vietnamese coffee is the best tasting coffee in my opinion.

Excellent Product From A Reliable Seller
I purchased this for my husband for his birthday. I am not a coffee drinker so I had to rely on his review of the product. He LOVES it! He was impressed with the quality of the workmanship, the strong coffee it made, how it wet all the grounds, the very detailed instructions for use, and the ease of use and clean up. I was not paying enough attention when I made the purchase and did not realize there was an option for a bigger size, but he said this was the perfect size and feels the other would have been bigger than he would want. The seller sent a very nice follow-up email, which was really appreciated, to see if I was happy with the purchase. The item arrived in a very timely manner and was well packaged against damage and arrived in excellent condition.
