Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

Classy, well-made shoes!
I have never found Dr. Martens to be exceptionally comfortable but these are pretty close. I still grabbed some squishy liners for the bottom either way as I have thin feet that don't exactly fill up the shoe (but do now with that lil lining). I wear a 9 in shoes as shoes/heels normally come and the 9m US is what I wear with these - the size is perfect for me. I can wear thick socks or thin pantyhose and these shoes work with both - they are comfortable and stay on my feet regardless of the sock/stocking type. These shoes are exactly what I wanted and the quality is what you expect from Doc Martens. They are built to last and as I still have my boots from the 90s grunge era, I know I will have these for at least 20 years (probably more as I'm not going to hike in these). They may seem pricey but you are paying for quality here. Those cheap knockoffs from Payless will last you a year while these will last a lifetime.

Your Typical DM Mary Jane
I am a huge DM fan and have worn their standard boot since the 90's. Because of the luck I've had with their boots and the quality of the product in general, I decided to branch out and try some of their other shoes. Here's what I found:* These have a very distinctive DM "look". When I where them with long pants, it's nearly impossible to differentiate them from the boots. To me this makes them more versatile - at least as far as appearance goes.* They also feel similar to the boot. They're made of the same material (and if you're not used to the feel of DM, they can seem a little unforgiving at first) so it shouldn't be too big a surprise to note that they wear pretty much the same way. If your feet are used to this, there is no need at all to wear these in.* The more scuffed they get, the better they look. A matter of opinion, I know, but I'm a product of the 90's; I like my jeans naturally frayed and my shoes dull and worn. However, if this is not a look you like, they easily polish - the leather is tough and likes to shine.* Because they are leather, they strap needs some tugging at first to fit in line with the buckle. This isn't really a complaint as I expected as much, but if you've never owned leather shoes like this before know that it only takes a couple of wears to stretch them properly.* I do have one complaint, though. Being used to the boots which involve a lot of dedicated lacing which caused the boot to hug you foot in a very snugly way, I didn't think about what the absence of those laces would mean. Basically, the shoe is very loose. If you have wide feet, this will work out fine, but if you don't you may want to consider a size smaller then you're used to.All and all, it a great shoe from a great company known for great shoes. Yea, great.

doesn't fit like a doc
I'm really not impressed with the new "refined" shape, i got the impression that the difference would be purely aesthetic i was hoping for a shoe which fit like a doc but which looked a bit neater. Unfortunately, the "refined" shape is at the expense of the fit. The toe area is inhumanly narrow and pointy inside as well as out. This is very disappointing since my favourite thing about Doc Martens is that they - unlike a lot of other shoes - are usually actually foot-shaped, wider at the toe than the heel. These aren't, these are plain old typical shoe-shaped, with silly pointy toes, which does not resemble any human foot i've ever seen.If you like the way typical docs fit, consider buying a larger size, or preferably a totally different style.

Just like the picture
When I was browsing the reviews for this shoe, I became nervous that the size 8 (only one available) in the Burgundy color would be way too large for my feet. They are roomy but they definitely fit! The toe part is long, probably two inches longer than my toe but they're comfortable and they don't fall off my feet. Great color. Love them as they are my new favorite shoe. For those who have wide-ish feet and aren't sure about the sizing - go for your regular size. Your toe will start right before the narrow part. I will say, they do make your feet look larger but I don't mind it. Glad Amazon had these! I'm pretty sure they're discontinued on the Doc Martens site.

Joking ...
I am extremely disappointed shoes received. I do not know if I'm the only one to have had this experience, but the shoes have a slight worry of magnitude. Knowing that Dr. Martens have a universal size, I told myself that if I normally take the 7UK/9US is the right size. So I ordered the size I normally doors. After expenses UPS and a little wait I finally get.But there is a little problem ... 7UK/9US that the seller sells are equivalent 9UK/11US ... we are talking about a difference of 4 CM.I took the trouble to contact the seller to make me say that I lied and blah blah blah ....Anyway, I suggest you do not buy from this seller and go take either the Dr Martens website or in a store. Why? Just because the buy here or buy in the store is the same price ... So no savings to be made here.

order a size up
i love mary janes and i love docs. this was exactly what i wanted and i really liked the color. i was so excited to get them til i put them on. i seriously thought they sent me a size too small. when i checked the shoe, it was a 10, my usual size!! all my docs are size 10. i considered breaking them in but the material was extremely stiff. so it was very disappointing that i had to return them.

I really like them, but...
They ran bigger than expected. Also, I had to pay a $10 exchange fee from VirtualExchanges in addition to return shipping, so obviously that wasn't preferable (they did ship pretty fast however, and the customer service was good). They're a little snug on the toes, but my feet adapted without blistering. I get compliments on them quite a bit. Often my back hurts from my job unless I'm wearing Dr. Martens, so I don't mind paying the extra money.

Poor quality leather
Always been a great fan of Dr Martens which is why I bought a pair of Corin Flat shoes for my daughter to wear for school, but what a disappointment! The upper leather is easily scuffed and despite having returned them to Dr. Martens (once already) and obtained a replacement, the same is happening again. Certainly not worth £75.00! Really disappointed.

A bon entendeur, salut).
