Q: Does it fold in flat to the wall inside that back bar, or with the "telescoping" is it extended out from the wall when closed

It does fold into that back bar, with the side arms folding inward to fully enclose the telescoping parts :)It looks great!

Q: Could you use this as a sweater dryer or is it too narrow?

I think it's a little narrow. Could work, but not great. A better option is the OXO Good Grips folding sweater dryer.

Q: The dimensions are stated as being 4.1X40X2.4 inches. I assume that the 40" is the width; what does it measure when it's stretch out from the wall?

40" wide pulls out to 20" love mine well made!

Q: What are the mounting specifications, such as distance between mounting points. Any pictures of what it looks like from behind?

Hi. The mounting is a keyhole-style cutout. Screws go into the wall; the case then hangs on the screws. The keyholes are just inside the outer edge of the case, so approx. 39 inches apart. HOWEVER, the best way to accurately space screws is to tape between the keyholes on the case, and then place that same piece of tape level on the wall. That way, there's no chance of a variance messing up how the item hangs! A tape measure works, too, but I seem to do better with the tape visual.
