Shoji and Kumiko Design: Book 2 Beyond the Basics

As good as book 1 and more!
I was ready to move on from square kumiko and learn the Mitsukude joint. Everything is with hand tools and I'm a power tool guy. The knowledge in this book helped me understand how to do this. As an American I didn't understand the metric system for measuring. So I bought metric rulers with both American and metric going in the same direction. I was able to convert with no problem knowing 12mm is ruffly 1/2 an inch. Then I could make the book work.I only got a couple of Mitsukude patterns from book 2 and needed more. That's what book 3 is for. Anyway awesome learning book and a must have for your shop library.

Can't wait to start trying out the techniques.
Brilliant! Can't wait to start trying out the techniques. On a recent trip to Japan I found incredible Kumiko designs everywhere and took lots of pictures. With Mr. King's books I'm all set to try creating my own designs. The process is a bit complex, but well worth the effort. A great gift for the woodworker in your life (in fact, Fine Woodworking magazine has recently had Kumiko projects on their cover). Oh...and by the way Mr. King also has some youtube videos which are helpful. (I bought both books)

An excellent advanced guide for designing and building shoji screens
An excellent advanced guide for designing and building shoji screens. The instruction is clear, concise and well presented. The author is a talented artist and effective teacher. I suggest also purchasing the first book in the series as there are exercises and tool recommendations that will help you learn a most complex form of art.

great reference for advanced kumiko designs and techniques
good books on this specific part of Japanese woodworking are hard to find. Desmond is a master, and his books are the best I've been able to find. the patterns and diagrams presented are very helpful, and the use of proper terminology throughout the book demonstrate his professional training in the field.

An all time great read and detailed greatly
I bought all 3 books. The first was a bit long bout the basics but that's what it was, basic. An all time great read and detailed greatly. I recommend this book and his others as well. Great for the common woodworker.. No real fancy equipment needed just a hand planer and a handsaw to complete these thing's.

Awesome book
What can I say. Desmond King is the best authority on shoji and Kumiko making. Excellent book. It's highly recommended that one buys all the earlier books to help understand the process from start.

Very Instructive
This book is well written with clear instructions, diagrams and photographs. His frequent use of Japanese terms is confusing but can be overcome. He makes frequent references to instructions and diagrams in his preceding Book 1 without including them in this book. Accordingly, Book 1 an essential companion to this book.

Excellent livre !
Formé au Japon, l'Australien Desmond King documente et explique la création de kumikos. Beaucoup de technique, de gabarits qui permettent d'apprendre les motifs simples, puis plus complexes !!! Enormément de travail !!! Essentiel !!!
