The Pope Of Greenwich Village Mickey Rourke (Sin City), Eric Roberts (Runaway Train) and Daryl Hannah (Blade Runner) "create emotion-charged characters who tingle with energy and play with conviction", (The Hollywood Reporter) in this modern-day classic. In New York’s Little Italy, smooth-talking hustler Charlie (Rourke) works in a restaurant and dreams of one day buying his own with his girlfriend Diane (Hannah). His wiry wheeler-dealer cousin Paulie (Roberts) waits tables, skims money off checks and is always scheming to score big. But they’re all about to pull a scam on the wrong guy: Eddie (Burt Young, Rocky), the Mafia King of Greenwich Village! Now these small-time con men are in big-time trouble: trouble so big that even their mobster uncle might not be able to save them! Desperate Hours From Oscar winner Michael Cimino (1978 Best Director, The Deer Hunter) comes this taut psychological thriller about a family held hostage in their own home. In dire need of a hideout, escaped convict Michael Bosworth (Mickey Rouke) uses his charming smile to gain entry into the posh home of Nora and Tim Cornell (Mimi Rogers and Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins) and their two children. While waiting for his beautiful lawyer-turned-accomplice (Kelly Lynch) to arrive, Bosworth’s smile soon explodes into homicidal rage when the Cornells desperately try to fight back. Holding the family at gunpoint and ruthlessly pitting husband against wife, Bosworth’s fury escalates into a shocking night of terror and cold-blooded murder. Finally, the family is forced to take a stand that will either destroy them... or unite them as never before.

The Pope of SPRING STREET
Recently I got into an online argument with a moron about Eric Roberts best role. To me, Roberts never had a better role than playing Paul Snider in STAR 80. My problem with Paulie TPOGV for starters is that Roberts plays him like a guido version of Lennie from Of Mice and Men..."Let's Go Tend The Rabbits Georgie!!". Roberts commits the sin that Robert Downey Jr speaks of in TROPIC THUNDER...he goes full retard..."My Thumb...CHA-LEE!!" Aside from Roberts annoying character, it's mindless how Mickey Rourke's character Charlie falls for Paulie's schemes time and time again. Charlie, though a slacker, seems to have a head on his shoulder in the beginning of the film. When Paulie get's Charlie fired from a restaurant, you'd figure he'd write him off? Nope, stupid schemes dreamt up by Paulie (the retard) are followed thru only to blow up in their faces. I love a crafty heist movie, but this isn't that at all. Plus, all the loose ends. What happened to Barney the safe cracker?? Lastly as a 20 year resident of NYC, I thought I'd enjoy seeing all sorts of sights of Greenwich Village or Little Italy... NO! The closest they get to Little Italy is Spring St and Mulberry. I used to eat lunch everyday in the park they show about 20 times so that was sort of cool. One star for the park (which the city is destroying or renovating, however you look at it).

Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts and Daryll Hannah all in their prime!
Shout! Factory double feature Blu-ray.I'd liken this to Martin Scorcesse's Mean Streets - part Mob story, crime story, coming of age (in your 20s) story, great drama, great comedy.Great slice of life set in NYCs Little Italy/ Greenwich Village. Based on Vincent Patrick's classic novel, Patrick also wrote the screenplay. Directed by Stuart (Cool Hand Luke) Rosenberg, who always did great work with his actors.Released when Roberts was making films like Star 80 and Runaway Train. Rourke starring in films such as Body Heat and Diner. Hannah broke out in the classic comedy Splash - she's lovely in this one, too. (she's seldom fully dressed BTW) Co-star Geraldine Page was nominated for an Oscar for one of the most foul-mouthed (and funny) performances ever. This was her last role. The late, prolific character actor, Jack Kehoe (Midnight Run, Melvin and Howard), is also terrific.Aside from Jack Kehoe, this film is stocked with familiar NYC character actors ("hey, it's that guy"), who've collectively been in a zillion movies and TV/Cable shows.Truly a great film.Desperate Hours. Haven't seen this remake of the underrated Bogart thriller. Besides Mickey Rourke, it co-stars Kelly (Drugstore Cowboy, Roadhouse) Lynch, Mimi (The Rapture) Rogers and Anthony Hopkins. Directed by Michael Cimino (The Deer Hunter, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Year of the Dragon... and Heaven's Gate. Make of that what you will.)If nothing else, it might be an entertaining curio, we'll see.Great value, it's great to see "Pope" -finally! - on Blu-ray.

1 cousin knows the other is trouble but goes along with his scheme anyway
The Pope of Greenwich Village is about two struggling cousins Paulie (Eric Roberts) and Charlie (Mickey Rourke) in New York City. At the start of the film Paulie gets both of them fired from their jobs at a restaurant. Desperate for money they decide to rob a safe, but things go wrong. The story is about their problems and aspirations.Paulie and Charlie have opposing personalities which shape their actions. Paulie is immature, a schemer and can’t think past the next day. Charlie on the other hand has a kid and a girlfriend Diane (Daryl Hannah) who is pregnant with their child. He’s much more mature and responsible. The two are inseparable because they’re family even though Charlie knows Paulie is trouble. That’s the draw of the film. The two are engaging so the audience wants to see whether the two will survive their transgression and each other. It’s not really about the crime but the two cousins’ relationship.Roberts is insufferable in his role. He won’t shut up and becomes a real weasel later on. Rourke play his part much more cool. When he feels the pressure he has little outbursts but then keeps his calm exterior. The only real problem is the ending sort of drags things out.C

I'd never see POPE... - which I watched first. It was really good and Eric Roberts plays a similar character to his RUNAWAY TRAIN role. Unfortunately RUNAWAY TRAIN is a limited release so if you can find it, check it out. BUT this is a Mickey Rourke set. He was excellent in POPE... the bonus features explains how prepared for the role and worth time to watch. The reason I bought this movie is I love Rourke in DESPERATE HOURS. It's a remake of the Bogie movie. I saw it when it came out years ago I had the Laser Disc then the DVD which I sold off when the Blu was released. The cast is excellent and even if you know the film (via Bogie) it's great to is Rourke swing from being what seems nice to being a cold blooded killer.

My thumb Charlie, they took my thumb.
A film I have not seen since I rented it out from the video shop in the 80's, a most enjoyable 'wise guy' buddy movie, before Mickey Rourke chopped his face up with crap plaggy surgery!!!!. One of Eric Roberts better performances, from an erstwhile lackluster career.

eventually, a fun movie
Nothing to add to the plot description by Amazon, this movie definitely does not qualify for an Oscar nomination, however it manages to provide some good fun. What is remarkable is that there is not so much violence for a goodfella movie (which made my wife to go through it).Mickey Rourke plays himself naturally, Eric Roberts (Paulie) gives an excellent performance, and Daryl Hannah makes you feel better even when she plays angry.Recommended for a relaxing Saturday evening.

Not the thumb, please not the thumb...
You've read the review above so I won't rehash the plot. Essentially a buddy movie, I originally wanted to see this after accidentally coming across the book in a job lot of old paperbacks. TPOGV is brilliantly acted by Rourke and Roberts, Rourke as the serial schemer looking for his big break and Roberts as the serial loser who relies on his friend to pick up the pieces when it all goes to crap. And it does...Notable for a sight of Daryl Hannah in her 80's aerobics gear (when she was in her prime) and the bone-crunching moment when Roberts realizes that messing with the Mafia means his promising career as a darts player has been prematurely curtailed. Also a great view of the World Trade Center towers circa 1984 as they drive home from the racetrack. Definitely worth a watch, although my advice is to read the book first.
