Greatest film of all time.
I usually don't get Terrance Malick. But this film, his mouth is filled with the most profound speech. It is a decisive answer to Scorsese's Silence which basically said, you can act against your conscience by not standing for what you really believe in publically but hold to it in your mind and heart. Sorry but that would've gotten you ex-communicated from the church in the early days, and Jesus promised he would not confess you as belonging to him.On a secular perspective, there is today a staunch moral expectation placed on society. How far will you go for your convictions on the poor, taxes, or government? When everyone deserts you, pressures you to fall into step with those around you - what will you do?That's the question the film poses with utter skill and beautyThis is my favorite film of all time because of what it says, how it says it, and even more important, what it asks of you and I - the viewer.

Beautiful, yet hard to watch
Every Christian should see this movie. This very humble man realized he could not do something the law required him to do, even though it would cost him dearly. He was accused of false motives by everyone - except his wife. This true story should inspire us to living up to our beliefs.Non-Christians may also enjoy this. It's wonderful to see the happiness his family has with such a simple life. The encroaching government is threatening that life. Anyone with strong morals may have to face the decision he did.The movie grows slowly toward it's inevitable conclusion, giving us time to fully empathize with his plight. At any point, he could have uttered a few words that would change his fate immediately. He realized that he was a nobody, that no one would ever know what he did. (Actually, he was wrong, because his life story has inspired many.) But he was not living for the quick rewards of following what everyone expected him to do.

An exquisite haunting new Malick film
After sporadically releasing a series of wonderful, classic films over the course of his career, the last few by Malick have come more frequently but were in my opinion, a bit weak and meandering. However, his latest “A Hidden Life” is not only a return to form, it may be his best piece ever. The film (based on a true story) concerns an Austrian farmer Franz who lives with his family in an idyllic village/farm up in the Austrian hills in the late 30s. With the rise of Hitler, citizens are heavily leaned on to sign an oath to Hitler. When Franz refuses, the repercussions to him and his family slowly but palpably build both from the government and even the local villagers. The film is utterly heartbreaking and utterly beautiful at the same time. The cast is excellent though largely unknown to me except for Bruno Ganz in one of his last performances as a Nazi general on the tribunal formed to try Franz for his civil disobediance. The cinematography is breathtaking and the score is magnificent. I know that this is one that is going to stick with me all of my days. The optimal way to view it is on a big screen at a theater, but Disney somewhat bungled this one and didn’t give it a proper Awards campaign because it definitely at least deserved a Best Picture and Best Cinematography Oscar nomination. I look forward to being able to see the blu ray!

A Hidden Life redeems all else Mallick has done
One of the best movies I've ever seen: beautiful cinematography; great acting; true story filmed in actuallocations of the events; seriously important message, especially for our time.

Nazi Evil vs Moral Strength.
Really wanted this film on DVD. Based on a true story. It should have been nominated for an Oscar. Great acting with a powerful storyline. Example of one man's battle against the evil of Nazism. The film holds your interest. The beauty of the Austrian country side verse the horror of Nazi rule is so powerful. Makes you think of, how you would act during those times.

Doesn't Work for UK
Waited a good few weeks for this to arrive. I was particularly excited to watch it. When I took it out of the package the first thing I noticed is that the box was really flimsy, like what you'd expect if you bought a copy from a car-boot-sale. Worst of all though, the DVD didn't work when putting into a DVD player. I tried multiple devices but had the same issue. The issue being that it was not the correct format for the UK, I was presented with 'incorrect region code'.

Do Yourself Good Don't Listen to Others.
Here’s a movie with grace and beauty for the land-scape that “Terrence Malick” envision for us to see.If you haven’t lived and worked an extraordinary life of peace and tranquility you’ll never get this movie.this is Franz and Fani ideal life that they want for them and the kids they have together.now after travelling on this journey with them to see how they work to get food on the table for the familyin the fields of the land. in come the Nazis who wants Franz to fight for them in World War 11.so even though the Austrian peasant farmer is faced with death for treason. still would not pledge allegianceto the Fuhrer. remember now this is 1939 the year of “Adolf Hitler” and progress to 1943.and it shows you how your neighbors can turn on you in a heartbeat. they spit on you and fight you anddon’t want to help you in anyway shape-or-form.Widescreen 2.39:1Runtime 174 Min.English 7.1 DTS-HD Master.

Probably the slowest movie ever made... would not recommend.
This is the slowest movie ever. I was really excited to watch this, but I was thoroughly disappointed. The movie had almost no dialogue, and I had no idea what was going on for most of the time. The 3 hours that it took to watch this movie felt like 3 lifetimes. By the time you get to the end of the movie, you are almost rooting for the main character to get killed so that the movie can end and you can get on with life. This could have been an amazing movie; the filing was adequate, and the basic storyline could have made an amazing movie. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone... even if I got it for free, let alone almost $30.

A beautiful film about a beautiful action that realistically portrays human anguish.
The movie is a visually beautiful, and its portrayal of the protagonists family and setting is bucolic without seeming over sentimentalized. Once the tragic moment happens where the protagonist discovers he cannot pledge allegiance to Hitler the path is set, and the portray of his questions and his suffering seems to make more sense than many movies I have seen lately.
