Super smooth quack to gritty, ballsy overdriven leads...and everything inbetween.
This is a great set of pickups. I've owned about 10 different Stratocaster single coil sets from vintage fender to overpriced boutique sets. As for aftermarket pickups go, these Antiquity Surf II pickups are good as I've heard or played. I've played a few early 60's vintage Strats and these do a great job in recreating their sound. The custom hotter wound bridge is hands down the best single coil bridge pickup ever. It's not ice picky at all, plus when you add overdrive it screams (in a good way) great distorted sounds yet notes are still distinguishable. The neck and middle are great too, the neck has a lot of bass response it reminds me of a neck poistion humbucker on the EAD strings. The middle pickup sounds amazing, even on it's own at switch position 3 (& most middle strat pickups only sound good when mixed with another pickup In the 2 & 4 positions) 2 & 4 are dead quiet with plenty of Hendrix-esqe quack. This set isnt cheap but you wont regret the purchase or have buyers remorse once you play them. I definitely recommend these to any gutarist looking for that vintage Stratocaster tone.

Round sounding pickups, very balanced.
Round sounding pickups, very balanced. Matched what I've always heard in my head. Only wish I could get a non-staggered set but then I suppose they wouldn't be "antiquity". I didn't care much about the relic-ing but have to say they are super attractive with my pearl pickguard.

Good, not great for the price.
These are pricey. They are hound wound in the Duncan custom shop, but these have a brittle high end that I couldn’t dial out on a Strat with a Deluxe Reverb. The wind is a little hotter than a 50’s vintage style pickup, but I think by degaussing (de magnetizing) these pickups, it contributes to the shrill high end these exhibit. Vintage pickups lose .5% magnetic strength per 100 years, so I don’t understand the point of it. I do like the bridge being wound hotter, but it’s too much in that the set isn’t balanced. The 2 position has much more midrange than the 4, which requires compromising on pickup height or making amp adjustments to favor one or the either. I’d have to recommend going boutique for this price. Cheers.
