Well built. Perfect replacement for my sun destroyed tail bag.

Bought this for a 2000 DRZ400E. The 'E' doesn't have the rear subframe that extends to the back fender, like the 'S' model does. On this bike, the prior owner reinforced the underside of the flimsy rear fender with heavy layers of carbon fibre, so it's plenty stiff.This rack is nicely made, sturdy, nicely welded and powder coated with a stain black finish - and produced in the USA by an American company - that's a bonus in my book.The rack was super easy to mount and the instructions are simple to follow. Just a couple of holes to drill in the rear fender.What I am not fond of:- It's pretty small. I have a Wolfman tail bag and the bag takes up about 1/3 of the seat and all of the rack, so that limits the usefulness of the rack to small, light weight items.- There are plastic spacers that insert into the mounting holes and two Allen head bolts are supplied to attach the front arms of the rack to the seat mounting bolt holes. I suggest gluing these spacers into the holes in the mounting arms. Otherwise, if you have to remove the seat on the trail for any reason, you will lose one or both spacers. Vanished. Into another dimension. Then the rack is loose and you can plan on it breaking the rear fender. Fair warning.If your needs are carrying a small item - maybe a tiny tail bag, a jacket or a squishable sleeping bag, this rack is fine. With a compact tent, sleeping bag and a few essential that I stuffed into a dry bag , there ain't much room to sit.

This is an awesome rack. I love how it looks and works. Unfortunately, there was a total missed opportunity with the mounting hole alignment towards the front. I ended up drilling my own extra hole in order to mount a Rotopax more forward, since having it way far back is awkward. The added bonuses of doing this are:1) The Rotopax perfectly covers the exposed screw heads in the circular center part of the tank. So there's no risk of the screws rubbing on anything now.2) Having the Rotopax weight forward lessens the load on the subframe cross-bar under the screws (less of a diving-board leverage effect when going over bumps). My friend has broken his subframe several times with another rack by overloading this point.3) The Rotopax no longer blocks the rear portion of the rack, allowing me to use the open tabs to attach straps for extra items like a tent and sleeping bag.The only other modification I made was to cut the standoffs in half. The standard 1-inch standoff was way too high looking and made the rack stick up like a stink-bug. Once cut down they helped level out the rack a LOT and make it look more streamlined as shown in the pictures.I'll be taking this bad boy to Death Valley at the end of the year. I will hopefully have an update as to how it holds up under hard use.Edit: Rack is still going strong after getting beat up in Death Valley. I had several severe spills (granted my sattle bags took the brunt of the falls) and the tail rack held up fine. I'm not sure how well this would handle a direct hit to a boulder, but for anything else it's perfect.

Well thought out rack, highly recommend this for your DRZ400

This rack was installed in March 2021 on a '21 DRZ400sm. Two years later, it shows barely any wear after 7000 miles of on/off road use. I sometimes pair it with the Nelson Rigg Trail End tail bag because I saw a picture of that set up on their website. It fits perfectly. I can also use the Nelson-Rigg Fuel Bottle Carriers to carry fuel because they mount so securely and I only need a couple liters reserve, but you can easily mount a Rotopax for more fuel capacity instead. Add a couple Voile straps and stainless tie down rings and you can lash down anything that fits on the rack. It fits precisely, installs easily and was an excellent upgrade---no regrets, no downsides.

The rack does it's job, however it doesn't really fit that well. Tis a two person job to install it. That is a shame, as getting under the seat is a fairly regular occurrence. For the price, there may be better options.
