Recommended - cute kefir kit
Excellent kefir kit. I bought 2 kits to ferment water kefir grains and drink from each one on alternate days. Each holds about 800ml (filtered) water. Love the lower filter lid for easy pouring and the upper aerator lid. Very easy to use. Also got a plant mat warmer to sit the jars on in my kitchen during these cold these winter months. Makes a great gift too

Not necessary
It's not really necessary all you need is a jar. However its strong and well made and is also a juicer.

Fit for purpose...
I like this kefir jar just fine. No complaints. Fact is the same can be achieved with a si,ple glass jar and cheesecloth covering. ...as I did for years before I ordered & received this. It works but so do many other much less expensive Items. Good product. Does the job.

Fiddly, but still good idea
The round hole in the cover makes it super inconvenient to pour ready kefir from the jar. It would be much better if there was no hole. It is easy to take the lid off and pour milk in.Otherwise the jar still works OK, better than having to deal with separate sieve.

Well Designed Kit
I have just begun to make my own kefir, so I don't know what the results will be, but this kit is so well designed it makes the job easier. I actually bought two of these. One was a gift and one was for me, and I am delighted with mine.

DO NOT USE for milk kefir - stick to sieving... and badly designed for milk kefir anyway
The product description implies this product can be used for milk.If you have endless patience and don't mind mess it can.The design is actually very poor - and lazy.My kefir is thick. The sieve lid gums up immediately. I hoped I could partially undo the dust cover thing - but this just gets covered in thick kefir and causes more drips.Taking it out, the hole in the middle starts overflowing if not carefully pouring .Did I mention it was SLOW....So I then put in the scraper lid thing. This is hard to put in - it doesn't quite engage easily so needs the catch pressing in - fiddly with my big fingers. This is supposed to clear the filter lid so it filters better. It doesn't...Even if it did work it would mean swapping the clear dust lid for this scraper every time you pour - not exactly hassle free.A better design would have had the scraper integral to the lid.The whole thing then remains gummed up after pouring - so if this dries out the speed is even SLOWER -- or else you need to wash the filter lid - the very thing this was supposed not to avoid. And by the way - there are no detailed printed instructions provided for any of this... just an image of the scraper thing as a component. So this VERY EXPENSIVE bit of kit was utterly useless.Compare this to me usual method -Gently agitate jar so kefir loosensremove old tea towel square held on to kilner jar with elastic band.Place teatowel square on surface, air side down so inner surface not in contact worktop surface.Pour into large stainless steel sieve - ignore all the nonsense about kefir needing to be free of metal contact - stainless is fine. The large sieve can be gently agitated and kefir goes through into large plastic jug.Kefir grains gently returned to jar.Kefir liquid poured into Contigo Shake & Go (these are great to shake for smooth kefir...)Little bit of Milk used to wash out jug - this poured into Kilner - then kilner topped up.Jug and sieve washed...I can do all this in less than the time to drain out kefir from this useless product... may be ok for water kefir but the whole point of kefir is that it creates sticky biofilms - I can't see how the sieve lid will not need washing...
