This May 11, 2017 cartoon by Matt Wuerker, published first in POLITICO, was drawn just after Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. In his role as head of the FBI, Comey had been leading the FBI's investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians during the 2016 election. Trump's initial rationale for the firing was the manner in which Comey conducted the inquiry into HIllary Clinton's e-mail, actions Trump praised previously. When this explanation was challenged, Trump's rationale shifted to focus on a "recommendation" by Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. The cartoon's caption reads: "Then. Lock her up! Lock her up! Trump 2016. Now. I had to fire Comey. He treated Hillary very badly. Credibility gap."
