According to the manufacturer (SAS-TEC), you'll want the dimpled side to face the body. We include more information about this in our packaging insert

Q: Can these be trimmed?

Yes they can be trimmed down to a custom size if needed and still deliver level 2 impact protection, but they cannot be returned after they've been modified. We also sell a ventilated version in a smaller protector size, which are 5 1/4 in. wide (at widest point) and 8 in. long. Hope this helps!
