Q: what material are the checkers made out of?

Depleted Uranium, which makes them quite heavy... ok, obviously kidding. Truly, I don't know what they are made of be they are really just about the perfect weight and the polish feels great in the hands. They are also uniform in size. Very well made product, considering the price. Bottom line: I'm happy with my purchase. For the money it is great.

the previous answer is wrong. the surface is NOT smooth. the triangular points are stitched onto the top of the fabric
