Solid representation of The Dark Knight
This collectible from Hot Toys is figuratively speaking, a living legend amongst collectors. There were many instances of consumers reporting that their figure had "oily abs". A design flaw that an oil used to lubricate the inner workings of the figure would leak around the midsection. This was typical among the early versions of the figure. If Hot Toys fixed the problem or if it was just select batches that were bad is not to my knowledge. What I do know is that mine showed up to my doorstep defect free. What that means is a figure that met and exceeded my expectations. Until now I would've been able to call this the best 1/6 scale Batman collectible around. Now that Hot Toys has released their new and improved version (DX12) the title of champion has switched hands. Now, that's not to deter anybody from investing in this because it is certainly worthy of purchase if you're willing to shell out the coin necessary to acquire it.The figure comes with 2 heads. The standard cowl with the PERS system. This allows the user to do two things. One is to swap between 1 of the 3 face plates. The second feature is the PERS which essentially lets you position the eyes in just about anyway a human could position their own. It gives the figure a very life like existence and allows you to give your figure it's own identity through eye expression coupled with facial expressions. The facial expressions work with the provided face plates. There are three face plates that range from angry, smirking, and mouth open/talking. The cowl (head sculpt) itself is impressive. It captures the likeness of Christian Bale under the cowl very well. Depending on how you tweak the eyes you can get a very accurate portrail of the actor as The Dark Knight. In other instances, if the eyes are positioned strangely, or if you are looking at the figure from certain angles, it looses that appeal. It's really something that you have to play with and tune to your liking. Once you find whatever sweet spot you're looking for, it becomes very satisfying to admire. The second headsculpt he comes with is the sonar eyes. There is a special neck with an LED light that is used in conjuction with the sonar eyed head. There is a little switch on the back of the neck that is moved up and down to activate and turn off the sonar feature. This gives Batman a very unique look from the film and almost acts as a homage to his comic book "white eyes" heritage. It's very impressive to see in action. For some, it's the reason why they'd make the purchase to begin with.Batman comes with several accessories ranging from different hands, Batarangs, and his sticky bomb gun used during the Hong Kong heist scene and the hostage rescue scene toward the end of The Dark Knight film. He also comes with the backpack he was wearing before making the jump during the Hong Kong scene to retrieve Lau. You get everything you need to recreate and/or emulate that scene. You also get a stand to hold your collectible up so that it doesn't run the risk of falling. The base has two parts. The actual base where the figure stands and what can be categorized as a "cradle" that goes underneath the groin of the figure and acts as it's support. The cradle can be adjusted for height which can create a tighter or looser grip it holds on the figure. As with all DX figures, the base also has 2 LED lights used to add a further touch to the DX02.The body itself is composed of plastic and rubber. The design is a very accurate portrail of the suit featured in The Dark Knight. Although, not perfect, it was for a while the best representation you could find. At this point it is the second best because of Hot Toys latest effort with their DX12. Regardless of that it is still a worthy purchase if merely for the ability to display him with his sonar eyes. It's also a collector favorite and will only become more and more valuable as time goes on. The cape that it comes stock with is surprisingly good in my opinion. Some people will argue but I have other Hot Toys Batman figures and have felt obligated to create my own custom capes. The DX02 never made me feel it was a necessity but more or less a want and not a need. The figures only downside is it's ability to pose. For me, I could care less. I keep my figures in very neutral and non threatening to the material poses. I get satisfying results by doing very little and thats exactly how I like it. However, for the purchaser who wants to do outlandish poses with their DX02, I have bad news for you. You aren't going to get too much. The rubber used on the arms is what i'm mentioning particularly. It restricts the arms from getting to and maintaining ultra dramatic poses. It's not that you can't get a solid pose for your figure it's just that you can't do a whole lot in the way of "extreme". Also, the rubber is stretched and compressed everytime you move the arms and legs of the figure. This puts "wear and tear" on Batman. It's best to find a pose that won't hurt the figure while at the same time being something that you're okay with.Overall, you pay a lot for this guy. There is really no getting around that. What you get back is a very awesome collectible that is a classic in the 1/6 scale world. There are collectors that would never part ways with their DX02 no matter what was available on the market. That speaks a lot for a figure that realistically is no longer king of the hill. If you've got the money and you're just looking for an excuse to buy it, look no further than how much it is coveted by the hardcore. They love it. I love it. You'll love it too. I guarantee.
