Is this required for a new pool? Or just recommended?

You wouldn’t need this for a new pool. Just chlorinate and adjust pH and alkalinity and you’ll be done, if the water is clear. You only need “this” if your pool is socked with algae and out of control.

How many gallons does a 32 oz bottle treat?

A 32 oz bottle of Revive treats 24,000 gallons

Do you shock the pool first? Or use Revive first?

I get best results after shocking. I don’t know if they have changed the product’s chemistry or if pool was just worse this year, but one 32oz for 16,000 gal pool wasn’t enough this year. Had to repeat revive to get the pool clear.
