Q: The description says "Easily affixes to the trigger guard" but the pic and part number are for whole grip panels. Which is it?

Mine are the "whole panel" type as you put it, for a 45 acp automatic 1911 clone. I think the one you are talking about is for a different auto. Only a guess here but you have a compact 9 mm? or small 45? If it says "easily affixes to the trigger guard" then it is not for a 1911 clone 45 then.

Q: What is the effective distance of the laser in yards?

It is condition dependent. You will be able to see the laser further, the less sunlight is showing. Anywhere from 7 yards in bight sunlight to hundreds of yards with no light.

Q: Is this the front or side activated model?

It has 2 switch's, one is on back of grip that senses it in your hand and the activation sswitchis on from the front under trigger, very bright
